He is trying to rebuild his house and is looking after his granddaughter from time to time. He is quiet on the surface, but underneath he is grieving for his recently deceased wife. When a disturbing detail about his wife's past suddenly comes to the surface it threatens to destroy the fragile peace he has created, and affects everyone he loves.
When the movie starts with good few minutes of a car driving down a misty road you know you are in for a long ride. The harsh landscape of the setting is almost a character in the film. It gives the movie almost a magnetic quality. But there's a sense of imminent tragedy lurking underneath it all.
WHITE WHITE DAY tells a seemingly simple story, but is secretive at times, letting the viewers decide for themselves what motivates the characters. And it is often what happens off screen that has the real impact.
The cinematography however goes a bit overboard with still static shots of everchanging nature, as beautiful as they are they quickly turn irritating.
There are wonderful performances from all involved, specifically a tour de force from the lead Ingvar Siggurdson, as he slowly goes to pieces, his anger, pain and frustration tearing him apart on the inside, as he is just sitting there quietly like a bomb ready to go off.
WHITE WHITE DAY has a story to tell and has some interesting characters to match. It is, however first, and foremost an Arthouse film that tries to experiment with cinematography, light and pacing. It also relies on the viewer's attention, but it is a long, slightly depressing movie and not everyone will last the distance. But if you do it is rather rewarding.
Some movies hide the fact that they have little to say beyond the artistic impressions. WHITE WHITE DAY is not such a film.

Focused on the life of the band and their collaborators over the 3 vital years in which they developed critically acclaimed albums, Humanz' and 'The Now Now' and undertook their most ambitious world tour to date. I really don't understand the negativity towards this fun sendoff. A documentary can be a number of things, and some people will expect them to be a certain way. This was never meant to be some monumental film for Gorillaz, rather it is a celebration of the last two albums and their accompanying world tour. It gave me a renewed appreciation for Humanz, with a closer look at its initial production. I even listened to all of The Now Now after this, my summer 2018 soundtrack. Everybody that worked on these projects and performed together all seemed to be like a big family. The talented people that made these albums possible are featured. Damon and Jamie were really funny, too. You get to see some interesting behind the scenes action at the making of the music, and even for Jamie's sketches that would become official artwork for the band. While the title Reject False Icons does not really relate to the mantra/idea from Demon Days, the festival in LA looked amazing. I guess that some expected much more from the Gorillaz brand in a weird way. Denholm's Director's Cut was uploaded onto YouTube in three parts, which was a nice gift at the end of the year for the niche fan base. A part of his style was to have most of the film in black and white, with the concerts being in color to show off the light show of the stages and energy of the performers. While not groundbreaking in any way, this will appeal much more to Gorillaz fans such as myself.

As a longtime fan of Gorillaz and Damon's past work, I was expecting something extravagant from this, however it just felt like an extended tour video. the irony in a title like "reject false icons" and the subsequent applause was mind-boggling. don't get me wrong, I loved hearing some classic Gorillaz (M1-A1, Latin Simone, and O Green World especially) but I know anyone who wasn't a mega fan wouldve been quite bored- this includes my stepdad who sadly was roped into this theatre.
3.5/10 rounded to a 4 for benefit of the doubt. When you didnt get to get tickets. The sign warning for sand at 3:50 is just hilarious.

As a secular psychological concept, greed is an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs. The degree of inordinance is related to the inability to control the reformulation of "wants" once desired "needs" are eliminated. Erich Fromm described greed as "a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction. It is typically used to criticize those who seek excessive material wealth, although it may apply to the need to feel more excessively moral, social, or otherwise better than someone else. The purpose for greed, and any actions associated with it, is possibly to deprive others of potential means (perhaps, of basic survival and comfort) or future opportunities accordingly, or to obstruct them therefrom, thus insidious and tyrannical or otherwise having a negative connotation. Alternately, the purpose could be defense or counteraction from such dangerous, potential negotiation in matters of questionable agreeability. A consequence of greedy activity may be an inability to sustain any of the costs or burdens associated with that which has been or is being accumulated, leading to a backfire or destruction, whether of self or more generally. So, the level of " inordinance " of greed pertains to the amount of vanity, malice or burden associated with it. Views [ edit] Thomas Aquinas says that greed "is a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things. 1] A1 In Dante's Purgatory, the avaricious penitents were bound and laid face down on the ground for having concentrated too much on earthly can also be represented by the fox. Meher Baba dictated that "Greed is a state of restlessness of the heart, and it consists mainly of craving for power and possessions. Possessions and power are sought for the fulfillment of desires. Man is only partially satisfied in his attempt to have the fulfillment of his desires, and this partial satisfaction fans and increases the flame of craving instead of extinguishing it. Thus greed always finds an endless field of conquest and leaves the man endlessly dissatisfied. The chief expressions of greed are related to the emotional part of man. 2] Ivan Boesky famously defended greed in an 18 May 1986 commencement address at the UC Berkeley 's School of Business Administration, in which he said, Greed is all right, by the way. I want you to know that. I think greed is healthy. You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself. 3] This speech inspired the 1987 film Wall Street, which features the famous line spoken by Gordon Gekko: Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. 4] Inspirations [ edit] Scavenging and hoarding of materials or objects, theft and robbery, especially by means of violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority are all actions that may be inspired by greed. Such misdeeds can include simony, where one profits from soliciting goods within the actual confines of a church. A well-known example of greed is the pirate Hendrick Lucifer, who fought for hours to acquire Cuban gold, becoming mortally wounded in the process. He died of his wounds hours after having transferred the booty to his ship. [5] Genetics [ edit] Some research suggests there is a genetic basis for greed. It is possible people who have a shorter version of the ruthlessness gene (AVPR1a) may behave more selfishly. [6] See also [ edit] References [ edit] Thomas Aquinas. "The Summa Theologica II-II. Against All Enemies First edition cover Author Tom Clancy with Peter Telep Audio read by Steven Weber Country United States Language English Genre Spy fiction Techno-thriller Military fiction Publisher G. P. Putnam's Sons Publication date June 14, 2011 Media type Print ( Hardcover, Paperback) Audio, eBook Pages 768 ISBN 978-0-399-15730-1 Against All Enemies is a spy thriller novel, written by Tom Clancy and co-authored with Peter Telep, and published on June 14, 2011. While it is set in the Ryanverse, it features a new character, ex- Navy SEAL and CIA paramilitary operations officer Max Moore, as he is tasked by a government joint task force to bring down a Mexican drug cartel and prevent Taliban terrorists from carrying out attacks in the United States. The book debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list. [1] A sequel, Search and Destroy, was scheduled to be released on July 5, 2012, but it was cancelled. [2] Plot summary [ edit] In Pakistan, CIA Special Activities Division (SAD) officer and former Navy SEAL Max Moore cultivates an asset in the form of Colonel Saadat Khodai of the Pakistan Army, who has information about the Taliban s connection with his own colleagues in the Pakistani armed forces. As Moore brings him to a hotel in Islamabad to be questioned by CIA officers, the Taliban assassinates Khodai by blowing up the place, killing Moores colleagues in the process. After a fruitless investigation into the incident, Moore is later recalled to the United States to take part in a joint task force aimed at bringing down the Juarez drug cartel in Mexico and Colombia, which involves playing them off against the rival Sinaloa cartel by discreetly helping the latter. While interacting with the Sinaloa Cartel disguised as a businessman, Moore finds out that the secret leader of the Juarez Cartel is billionaire Jorge Rojas. Along with cartel leader Ernesto Zuñiga, he plans to kidnap Rojass son Miguel and girlfriend Sonia, who are taking a vacation at the town of San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico as well as Dante Corrales, one of their bodyguards who is identified as a major player in the cartel. However, Guatemalan death squad Buitres Justicieros (Avenging Vultures) who had a blood feud with Corrales, abducts the couple as well as Corrales and the other bodyguards. Moore finds out that Sonia, whose real name is Olivia Montello, is a deep cover CIA agent, while Corrales barely escapes. Moore, along with a DEA agent embedded in the cartel as a sicario and his immediate boss, follow the couple and the Guatemalans to the nearby town of San Juan Chamula and rescue them. Miguel and Sonia were later freed by Moore. After hiding from Juarez Cartel and his immediate boss Fernando Castillo in particular, Corrales turns himself in to Zuñiga after surviving an attack that kills his girlfriend. From his ranch house in Juarez, Mexico, Zuñiga contacts Moore, who later extracts Corrales from a bloody shootout with sicarios sent by Castillo where Zuñiga is killed. Corrales then provides the joint task force with evidence of Rojas's association with Juarez Cartel. Recognizing the difficulty of turning in Rojas due to his connections with the Mexican government, the Mexican Special Forces were tasked by the joint task force with raiding his mansion in Cuernavaca and arresting him. During the raid, Moore shoots Rojas dead. Olivia was later extracted by her CIA superiors. Meanwhile, Taliban terrorists led by Mullah Abdul Samad approach the Juarez Cartel and try to enlist their help in smuggling them across the Mexico-United States border in order to carry out attacks in the north. When Rojas refuses his offer due to the expected loss in drug profits, Samad and his team decide to go through the border themselves through a smuggling tunnel owned by the Juarez Cartel between Mexicali, Mexico and Calexico, California, murdering the tunnel engineer and a drug mule (who is an asset of one of Moore's partners in the joint task force) in the process. They plan to carry out coordinated attacks on six planes in six cities across the United States using man-portable surface-to-air missiles. While attacks were largely prevented in San Diego, California and four other cities, Samad coordinates the attack in Los Angeles, killing hundreds. With the U. S. government out for blood, Moore later finds out Samad's whereabouts from his asset back in Pakistan, which is in a safehouse owned by the Sinaloa Cartel in Belize. Along with task force leader Henry Towers and a contingent of British Royal Marines training nearby, Moore captures him. Two weeks later, as he is waiting for a date with Olivia, Moore is approached by The Campus operative Dominic Caruso, who attempts to recruit him into the organization but later postpones his offer. Anthony Mackie👍👍👍. Seberg trailer ita. Average rating 3. 96 10, 821 ratings 552 reviews, Start your review of Against All Enemies (Max Moore, 1) This is not your father's Tom Clancy novel. But it is. It's not, in that we have brand-new characters here for the most part and they're dealing with a whole new set of circumstances. It's the same in that we have the same long expositions about details other authors would just skim. It's the same can't-put-it-down action that drives you to keep turning pages. And it has the same conservative political worldview that wraps up Clancy's commentary on contemporary US and world affairs in a... For the first time, since Red Storm Rising (which I still have yet to read) Tom Clancy departs from the Jack Ryan universe and introduces us to newcomer, ex-Navy SEAL and CIA operative Maxwell Moore! After a failed mission in the Middle East, resulting in Moore's allies are killed, he is brought back to the United States to take part in a new mission against the Mexican drug cartels. Moore goes undercover to infiltrate the cartels, and posing as a drug runner, whilst playing all the cartels off... This novel started with such promise! Spies spying, good guys, bad guys, bullets flying and then the reader finds out that our main protagonist, Maxwell Moore, isn't just your everyday upstanding, smart, handsome ex Navy Seal paramilitary operations officer for he has something, its a secret (I know what a surprise right. but wait it gets better, its a deep, dark, never told anyone, secret that he has. So for the next 400 pages (the softcover edition I have is 709 pages) this secret keeps... AGAINST ALL ENEMIES is Tom Clancy's first major fiction release to be written with the help of a co-author, Peter Telep. While authors like James Patterson use a coauthor all the time and turn out the same type of story, I could really tell a difference in this book compared to other Clancy novels. This novel seemed to devote a lot more time to the depth and emotional side of the characters, which was good. But at the same time, the story really seemed to slow down in the middle of the novel as... Remember those tight Tom Clancy plots with lots of moving pieces in different parts of the world, that slid together through the book to form an intricate machine? You won't find that here. Remember those intense scenes describing a fast-breaking event in slow motion, giving every detail? You won't find that here. Remember the constant recitations of model numbers of every real or imagined weapons system, complete with attachments? Still got that. I listened to this on Audible, and I give the... I made it to page 2 before seeing proof that this is another non-Clancy work. Here's a part of a sentence describing the Pakistan Special Service Group: it isn't dialogue. organization similar to the U. S. Navy SEALs, but, ahem, their operators were hardly as capable. Ahem' Amongst non-dialogue description in a book not written in any 1st-person narrative? C'mon. I stopped reading at page 14, and I'm returning the purchase. I read the prologue, and reread it slowly. I couldn't figure what... Blah. Just, blah. The book's strongest point is its plot, and how it paints a credible picture of how terrorists can collaborate with drug cartels to infiltrate the United States. It also presents a no-holds-barred look at modern-day counterterrorism and espionage. Everything else set me off. Tom Clancy's name may be on it, but I don't really think he wrote it. The Clancy brand is founded on research, realism and authenticity. Much of that was lacking in this story, especially in the action... We listened to this book on CD as we drove to Iowa and back. It was like listening to a more cliche filled version of any terrible movie shown on FX during a "manly man's movie marathon" weekend. When describing how quickly something occurred during a tense moment, the author depended on only one (horrible)pharase: in less than a heartbeat. Imagine hearing that every other chapter. it gets old really quick. The plot was beyond predictable (as was the dialogue) and the stock characterizations... This is the first Clancy book I've read where he co- authors with someone else. It will be the last. The story's badly written, the plot's overly involved and not always logical. I'm not certain why I bothered to finish the thing - maybe to see it any part at all had the quality that Tom Clancy is capable of writing. It didn't. A very disappointing book. It's too bad Clancy once again decided to cheat his readers by selling his name to cover a two-bit writer. I've been a long time fan of Tom Clancy and his "techno-thrillers" but found this book to be different than his usual fare. Not nearly the same focus on "gee whiz" tech, with a MUCH heavier focus on gritty, shoot em ups like Brad Thor and other authors. A good read, but not quite what I expected. The plot is fast-paced and the characters decent. Interesting plot twists abound and the main thrust of the conflict is fairly original. There were a few observations about the book which I found off... #1 in the Max Moore series. Tom Clancy (co-authored by Peter Telep) has left the Jack Ryan universe and begun a series starring ex-SEAL, CIA agent Max Moore in globe trotting, anti-terrorist activities. Enjoyable read but this is not new ground and has visited by Vince Flynn's CIA counter-terrorist Mitch Rapp (12 novels since 1999) and Brad Thor's Secret Service/Homeland Security agent Brad Thor (10 novels since 2002. not to mention Bond - James Bond. Max Moore series - A terrorist bombing in... This was not Clancy's best work (and I realize it wasn't all him, but his name is huge on the cover, so the outcome is on him. The overall storyline was intriguing, but the main character is not nearly on par with Jack Ryan, John Clark, or even Ding Chavez. In spots the story was even difficult to follow because there were so many characters, some you never hear from again and some who don't show up again until 150 pages later, making it hard to remember where they fit in the context of the... 3 or more like 3. 5 stars... I had been wanting to read something by Tom Clancy for awhile, so when I found "Against All Enemies" at a library book sale, I picked it up - cheap. I had no idea what it was about or what a wild ride I was in for. 700 + pages of riveting, extremely disquieting, violent, and hopeless events. I admire the book. It was well-written - obviously with the help of a Ghost Writer or collaborator. Clancy really did his homework. It was - thank God - a work of fiction, but it felt like it came right out... Actual rating is 3. 5 stars. One of the aspects I like about a Tom Clancy novel is that it is fiction but it seems so realistic. And this could be frightful considering the subjects he writes about. This is true about this book. In this book, the Taliban want to enter the United States. They go to the drug cartels in Mexico and ask for their help in using their drug routes. Like I said this book has some scary scenes and I hope it never happens. The culmination of the Taliban's plan was riveting... finished this one this morning, 4 jul 17, good story, 4-stars. This is a Tom Clancy book. If you've ever read another, you can probably stop reading this review. If you like Tom Clancy books, you'll like this one. If you don't like Tom Clancy books, what's wrong with you? In Against All Enemies, Clancy and his co-author, Peter Telep, imagine the chaos and terror that could befall the United States if the Taliban and a Mexican drug cartel got together and decided to cooperate with one another. Without giving too much away, it won't surprise you to know that... I just finished “Against All Enemies” by Tom Clancy with Peter Telep. I had read some of the reviews when it first came out that said it was not Clancy and didn't stack up with his earlier works, but I wanted to read it anyway and was happy to get it as a gift for Father's Day. I quickly worked it into my reading and I enjoyed the read. First, it has been a long time since I've read anything by Clancy. I picked up “Dead or Alive” six months ago when it came out, but have not worked it into my... A very well-constructed story with a new protagonist built on familiar themes from the master of espionage thrillers, along with a co-author. Tom Clancy and Peter Telep put a new spin on the world of counter-terrorism in this book by introducing a new character, Max Moore, to lead the charge. Clancy's most famous lead is usually Jack Ryan, known from so many of Clancy's books and subsequent movies, played by the likes of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford of course, Ben Affleck, and soon, Chris Pine... I normally don't write reviews for books on here, but I felt like for this one I needed to. I was about a quarter of the way through this book when I sensed something was wrong, something just didn't seem right. The story is confusing and disjointed. It was at this point I noticed the book was written by a co-author, which I had not noticed before, and things started to click into place. I came on here and read the other reviews and was not very encouraged that it was going to get any better. I... “Against All Enemies” by Tom Clancy with Peter Telep, published by G. P. Putnams Sons. Category – Mystery/Thriller BIG BOOK - BIG STORY - BIG ACTION “Against All Enemies” is quite different from all the other books written by Tom Clancy, in fact, this may be his best effort to date. The reader is introduced to a new character and a plot that is not only up to date but could very easily be in place today. Personally, I hope al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and the drug cartels do not read this book. Maxwell... I always enjoy a Tom Clancy novel. I enjoyed the new Max Moore character and the history behind him. I'm glad they used a whole book to introduce you into a new and complex character, haunted by his past, yet so aware of his purpose in life. His was an emotional journey, affected by those he only new for a matter of minutes or days. I believe he can be a critical character in future novels. That being said, the book was not Clancy at his best. It lacked a certain element and depth that the... In Against All Enemies, CIA operative and former Navy SEAL Max Moore is fighting a battle on two fronts. It starts off with him combatting the Taleban in Pakistan. It then transitions to the drug wars in Mexico, where Moore and a team are trying to take down the biggest drug cartel in the world. These two fights are related since the terrorists are supplying the drugs to the cartel to fund their Jihad operations. The cartel has a long reach, and the leader of the cartel is a very powerful... I appreciate the return to a "more traditional" Clancy, however, he still seems to have continued to back off the more extensive technical and scientific descriptions of weapons and other systems that originally (that is - throughout some of his earlier works) really lent non-fictional credibility to his fictional stories. (Think here all the way back to The Hunt for Red October and some of the technology and capabilities analyses available on submarines and undersea warfare. I realize that... This book was subpar for Clancy. Its as though he needed some money to pay bills and dashed the book off over a weekend. It thought the double plot was ill-conceived and implausible (although many might argue that all of his books are implausible. His gratuitous use of profanity in this book was offensive to me. The great English authors of the 19th century also dealt with subject matter which was, no doubt, fraught with gutter talk. Yet, it did not spill into their books and they produced some... When I started this book, I anticipated a read similar to Clancy's great (in my opinion) CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER. Unfortunately, this was not to be. This was a long book and an ambitious, perhaps too ambitious project. Clancy tries to tell several different stories about several different people in one novel, and in doing so introduces so many characters that one has a difficult time keeping track of them. He uses a plethora of acronyms, infinite detail of weapons, communication devices, and... It's a good thing Tom Clancy took his little sabbatical from writing his usual full length novels. He needed the break. This one was good. Not quite as good as his early Jack Ryan novels, but better than the latter Ryan novels. And his prescience is back, too. There were a couple of scenes that were chilling in light of current events. I will never forget reading about a plane crashing into the Capitol building and then living through 9/11/01 when planes were crashing into buildings. His new... This is the book you read when you're tired of reading anything intelligent, well researched, and generally well written. Fun story, easy read, Against All Enemies is the literary equivalent of a Redbox rental. There is almost no depth to the characters beyond the main protagonist Max Moore. It seems as if the author's tool of choice for ratcheting the suspense is to kill off multiple characters in consecutive scenes. Along with Dead or Alive, this is Clancy in name only. I'd be surprised if he... I've never read a Tom Clancy novel and think I am now a big fan. This book pulls absolutely no punches and the death toll is high but it's a great read. A character named Moore is an ex-Navy Seal gathering terrorist intelligence when he finds his way to Mexico to take down a major drug cartel leader. Both stories and a host of characters intertwine masterfully as we deal with loner Moore who's bad luck is everyone who surrounds themselves with him seem to die off. There aren't many plot secrets... This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here.

Overview Racing from the remote, war-scarred landscapes of the Middle East to the blood-soaked chaos of the U. S. -Mexico border, 1 New York Times bestselling author Tom Clancy delivers a heart-stopping thriller that is frighteningly close to reality. Working behind the scenes for the CIA, ex-Navy SEAL Maxwell Moore arrives at a rendezvous to take charge of a high-ranking Taliban captive and barely escapes with his life. Undaunted, Moore is relentless in his quest to find the terrorist cell responsible, but what he discovers leads him to a much darker conspiracy in an unexpected part of the globe. After years of planning, the Taliban have come to terms with a vicious Mexican drug cartel and agreed to supply them with opium. For the cartel, the deal means money, power, and ultimate control of the drug trade. His first effort,  The Hunt for Red October, sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto the bestseller list after President Ronald Reagan pronounced it "the perfect yarn. Clancy was the undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013. Hometown: Huntingtown, Maryland Date of Birth: April 12, 1947 Date of Death: October 1, 2013 Place of Birth: Baltimore, Maryland Education: Loyola High School in Towson, Maryland, 1965; B. A. in English, Loyola College, 1969 Read an Excerpt 1 Prologue RENDEZVOUS FOXTROT 0215 Hours, Arabian Sea 5 Miles South of the Indus River Coast of Pakistan A DARKENED SHIP is a burdened ship, Moore thought as he stood outside the pilothouse of the OSA-1 fast attack craft Quwwat. She was indigenously built by the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works and based on an old Soviet design, complete with four HY-2 surface-to-surface missiles and two twin 25-millimeter antiaircraft guns. Three diesel engines and three shafts propelled the 130-foot-long patrol boat at thirty knots across waves tinged silver by a quarter-moon shimmering low on the horizon. Running at "darken ship" meant no range or masthead lights, no port or starboard running lights. International Regulations for Preventing Collisions TOM CLANCY 2 at Sea (COLREGS) dictated that were an incident to occur, Quwwat would be at fault regardless of the circumstances. Earlier in the evening, at dusk, Moore had walked down a Karachi pier with Sublieutenant Syed Mallaah, trailed by four enlisted men, a SPECOPS team from the Pakistan Special Service Group Navy (SSGN) an organization similar to the U. S. Navy SEALs, but, ahem, their operators were hardly as capable. Once aboard the Quwwat, Moore had insisted on a quick tour that ended with a cursory introduction to the commanding offi cer, Lieutenant Maqsud Kayani, who was distracted as he issued orders to leave port. The CO couldn't have been much older than Moore, who was thirty-fi ve himself, but the comparisons stopped there. Moore's broad shoulders stood in sharp juxtaposition to Kayani's lean cycler's physique that barely tented up his uniform. The lieutenant had a hooked nose, and if he'd shaved in the past week, there was no clear evidence. Despite his rugged appearance, he had the twenty-eight-man crew's utmost attention and respect. He spoke. They jumped. Kayani eventually gave Moore a fi rm handshake and said, Welcome aboard, Mr. Fredrickson. " Thank you, Lieutenant. I appreciate your assistance. " Of course. " They spoke in Urdu, Pakistan's national language, which Moore had found easier to learn than Dari, Pashto, or Arabic. He'd been identifi ed as "Greg Fredrickson. an American, to these Pakistani naval men, although his darker features, thick beard, and long, black hair now pulled into a ponytail allowed him to pass for an Afghan, Pakistani, or Arab if he so desired. AGAINST ALL ENEMIES 3 Lieutenant Kayani went on: Have no worries, sir. I plan to arrive at our destination promptly, if not early. This boat's name means prowess, and she's every bit of that. " Outstanding. " Point Foxtrot, the rendezvous zone, lay three miles off the Pakistan coast and just outside the Indus River delta. There, they would meet with the Indian patrol boat Agray to accept a prisoner. The Indian government had agreed to turn over a recently captured Taliban commander, Akhter Adam, a man they claimed was a High-Value Target with operational intelligence on Taliban forces located along the southern line of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The Indians believed that Adam had not yet alerted his own forces of his capture; he had simply gone missing for twenty-four hours. Still, time was of the essence. Both governments wanted to ensure that the Taliban was not tipped off that Adam had fallen into American hands. Therefore, no American military assets or forces were being used in the transfer operation—except a certain CIA paramilitary operations offi cer named Maxwell Steven Moore. Admittedly, Moore had misgivings about using a security team of SSGN guys led by a young, inexperienced sublieutenant; however, during the briefi ng he'd been told that Mallaah, a local boy from Thatta in Sindh Province, was fi ercely loyal, trusted, and highly respected. In Moore's book, loyalty, trust, and respect were earned, and they would see if the young sublieutenant was up for the challenge. Mallaah's job was, after all, rudimentary: oversee the transfer and help protect Moore and the prisoner. 4 Assuming that Akhter Adam made it safely aboard, Moore would begin interrogating him during the trip back to the Karachi pier. For his part, Moore would use that time to determine if the commander was indeed an HVT worthy of serious CIA attention or somebody to leave behind for the Pakistanis to play with. Forward of the port beam, the blackness was pierced by three quick white fl ashes from the Turshian Mouth lighthouse guarding the entrance to the Indus River. The sequence repeated every twenty seconds. Farther east, nearer the bow, Moore picked up the single white fl ash from the Kajhar Creek light, and that fl ash repeated every twelve seconds. The sealed-beam revolving beacon of the often-disputed Kajhar Creek (aka the Sir Creek light) was situated on the Pakistan-India border. Moore had taken special note of the lighthouse names, locations, and their identifying fl ash sequences from the navigational charts rolled out during the briefi ng. Old SEAL habits died hard. With moonset at 0220 and fi fty percent cloud cover, he anticipated pitch-black conditions for the 0300 rendezvous. The Indians were running at darken ship, too. In a pinch the Turshian Mouth and Kajhar Creek lighthouses would keep him oriented. Lieutenant Kayani held true to his word. They reached Point Foxtrot at 0250 hours, and Moore shifted around the pilothouse to the only available night-vision scope mounted on the port side. Kayani was already there, manning the scope. 5 Meanwhile, Mallaah and his team waited on the main deck, midships, to haul the prisoner across once the Indian vessel came alongside. Kayani backed away from the night scope and offered it to Moore. Despite the gathering clouds, starlight provided suffi - cient photons to bathe the Indian Pauk-class patrol boat in a green eerie twilight, bright enough to expose the numerals 36 painted on her hull. Approaching bows-on, at twice the weight of the Quwwat, the fi ve-hundred-ton Agray carried eight GRAIL surface-to-air missiles and dual RBU-1200 ASW rocket launchers up on her bow. Each ten-tube system was capable of de ploying decoys and ASW rockets for surface-to-surface and antisubmarine warfare operations. The Quwwat felt diminutive in her presence. As the Agray began to drift down the port side and prepared to come about to make her approach, Moore spotted her name painted in black letters across the stern, rising above the mist agitated by the bow wash. He then glanced through the pilothouse door out to the starboard bridge wing and caught a short-long, short-long light fl ash. He tried to remember which lighthouse used that light sequence. The Agray completed her turn, and Kayani was now busy leaning over the port side, directing the placement of fenders to minimize any hull damage once the two ships came together. The fl ashes came again: short-long, short-long. Lighthouse, my ass, Moore thought. ALPHA-ALPHA was International Morse Code for, in practical terms, Who the hell are you? 6 A chill spiked up Moore's spine. "Lieutenant, we're getting an ALPHA-ALPHA on the starboard side. We're being challenged! Kayani charged across the pilothouse to the starboard wing, and Moore hustled up behind him. How many times had they already been challenged? They were in Pakistan territorial waters; what were Pakistan's rules of engagement? A fl are burst overhead, peeling back the night and drawing deep shadows across the decks of both patrol boats. Moore looked across the sea and saw it, a thousand meters out, rising up out of the waves, a nightmare with imposing black sail and dull black decks fully awash as she breached, her bow pointed at them. The commander had brought the sub to the surface to challenge them, then had fi red the fl are to visually confi rm his target. Kayani lifted the pair of binoculars dangling around his neck and zoomed in. "It's the Shushhuk! She's one of ours. She's supposed to be back at the pier! Moore's chest tightened. What the hell was a Pakistan Navy submarine doing in his rendezvous zone? He craned his head to the Agray, where he assumed that by now the Taliban prisoner was on deck. According to the plan, Adam was wearing a black jumpsuit and turban, and his wrists were bound. His escorts were supposed to be two heavily armed MARCOS, or marine commandos, of the Indian Navy. Moore spun back to face the submarine— And then, suddenly, he saw it—a line of phosphorescence 7 bubbling up in the water and streaking past their stern, heading toward the Agray. He pointed. "TORPEDO! In the next breath, Moore came up behind Kayani, shoved him over the side, then jumped himself as the torpedo struck the Agray in a horrifi c explosion whose thundering and fl ashing was as surreal as it was shockingly close. A blast wave of debris pinged off the Quwwat's hull and rained down to strike the water in dozens of splashes. Moore's eyes widened as the steaming, hissing sea came up at them, heated now by all the white-hot shards of hull and deck and torpedo that continued to blast off the Agray. As he hit the water, narrowly missing a jagged piece of steel, a ball of fl ames set off the Agray's GRAIL surface-to-air missiles and both clusters of ASW rockets on her fo'c'sle. Moore sank below the waves, his shoes colliding with something below. He swam back to the surface and jerked his head around, searching for the lieutenant. There he was, just out of reach. Suddenly, three of the Agray's ASW rockets blew up into the Silkworm missile housings aboard the Quwwat. The resulting detonations boomed so loudly and brightly that Moore refl exively ducked back under the water for cover. He swam toward the lieutenant, who was fl oating supine and appeared only semiconscious, his face bloody from a deep gash along the left side of his head. He must've struck some debris as he'd entered the water. Moore surfaced at the man's shoulder. He 8 splashed salt water onto the gash as Kayani stared vaguely at him. "Lieutenant! Come on! Thirty meters away, the sea surface was afl ame with burning diesel fuel. The stench left Moore grimacing as for the fi rst time he felt the deep rumble of nearby diesel engines. the submarine. He had some time. The sub wouldn't approach the wreckage until the fl ames subsided. Other men were in the water, barely visible, their shouts punctuated by more explosions. A strangled cry resounded nearby. Moore scanned the area for their Taliban prisoner, but the twin thunderclaps of another detonation sent him back under the waves. When he came up and turned back, the Quwwat was already listing badly to port, getting ready to sink. The Agray's bow was entirely submerged, the fi res and deep black smoke still raging, ammunition cooking off with sharp cracks and half-muffl ed booms. The air grew clogged with a haze that reeked of burning rubber and plastic. Willing himself into a state of calm as the heat of the fi res pressed on his face, Moore removed his shoes, tied the laces together, then draped them around his neck. Three miles to the beach. but right now, this low in the water, he had no idea where the beach was. With the exception of the fl ames, everywhere he looked was inky black, and each time he glanced toward the confl agration, his night vision was ruined. Flash-fl ash-fl ash. Wait a minute. He remembered. He started counting. one one thousand, two one thousand... at nineteen, he was rewarded with three more quick fl ashes. He had a lock on the Turshian Mouth lighthouse. 9 Moore seized Kayani and rolled him around. Still drifting in and out of consciousness, the lieutenant took one look at Moore, at the fi res around them, and panicked. He reached out, seizing Moore by the head. Obviously the man wasn't thinking straight, and this behavior was not uncommon among accident victims. But if Moore didn't react, the frantic lieutenant could easily drown him. Without pause, Moore placed both hands on the front of Kayani's hips with the heels of his hands against the man's body, fi ngers extended, thumbs grasping the lieutenant's sides. He pushed Kayani back toward the horizontal position, using this leverage to loosen the man's grip. Moore freed his head and screamed, Relax! I got you! Just turn around and breathe. " Moore grabbed him by the back of the collar. "Now fl oat on your back. " With the man in a collar tow, Moore began a modifi ed combat sidestroke around the burning debris, the pools of burning diesel beginning to swell toward them, his ears stinging from the continuous thundering and drone of the spitting and whipping fl ames. Kayani settled down until they passed through a half-dozen bodies, members of his crew, just more fl otsam and jetsam now. He hollered their names, and Moore kicked harder to get them away. Nevertheless, the sea became more grisly, an arm here, a leg there. And then something dark in the water ahead. A turban fl oating there. The prisoner's turban. Moore paused, craning his head right and left until he spotted a lifeless form bobbing on the waves. He swam to it, rolled the body sideways 10 enough to see the bearded face, the black jumpsuit, the terrible slash across his neck that had severed his carotid artery. It was their guy. Moore gritted his teeth and adjusted his grip on Kayani's collar. Before starting off, he looked in the direction of the submarine. It was already gone. During his time as a SEAL, Moore could swim two ocean miles without fi ns in under seventy minutes. Collar- towing another man might slow him down, but he refused to let that challenge crush his spirit. He focused on the lighthouse, kept breathing and kicking, his movements smooth and graceful, no wasted energy, every shift of the arm and fl utter of the feet directing the power where it needed to go. He would turn his head up, steal a breath, and continue on, swimming with machinelike precision. A shout from somewhere behind caused Moore to slow. He paddled around, squinting toward a small group of men, ten—fi fteen, perhaps—swimming toward him. "Just follow me. he cried. "Follow me. " Now he wasn't just trying to save Kayani; he was providing the motivation for the rest of the survivors to reach the shore. These were Navy men, trained to swim and swim hard, but three miles was an awful long way, more so with injuries. They needed to keep him in sight. The lactic acid was building in his arm and his legs, the burn steady at fi rst, then threatening to grow worse. He slowed, shook his legs and the one arm he was using, took another breath, and told himself, I will not quit. Ever. He would focus on that. He would lead from the front, 11 drive the rest of these men home—even if it killed him. He guided them across the rising and falling sea, kick after agonizing kick, listening to the voices of the past, the voices of instructors and proctors who'd dedicated their lives to helping others unleash the warrior's spirit lying deep and dormant in their hearts. Nearly ninety minutes later he heard the surf breaking on the shoreline, and with every rising swell he saw fl ashlights moving and bobbing all along the beach. Flashlights meant people. They'd come down to view the fi res and explosions offshore, and they might even see him. Moore's covert operation was about to make headlines. He cursed and looked back. The group of survivors had drifted much farther back, fi fty meters or more, unable to keep up with Moore's blistering pace. He could barely see them now. By the time his bare feet touched the sandy bottom, Moore was spent, leaving everything he had back in the Arabian Sea. Kayani was still going in and out as Moore dragged him from the surf and hauled him onto the beach as fi ve or six villagers gathered around him. "Call for help. he shouted. Out in the distance, the fl ames and fl ashes continued, like heat lightning that printed the clouds negative, yet the silhouettes of both ships were now gone, leaving the rest of the fuel to continue burning off. Moore wrenched out his cell phone, but it had died. Next time he planned on being attacked by a submarine, he'd be sure 12 to pack a waterproof version. He asked one of the villagers, a college-aged kid with a thin beard, for a phone. "I saw the ships explode. the kid said breathlessly. "Me, too. snapped Moore. "Thanks for the phone. " Give it to me. called Kayani from the beach, his voice cracking, but he seemed much more lucid now. "My uncle's a colonel in the Army. He'll get us helicopters here within an hour. It's the fastest way. " Take it, then. said Moore. He'd read the maps, knew they were hours away by car from the nearest hospital. The rendezvous had intentionally been located opposite a rural, sparsely populated coastline. Kayani reached his uncle, who in turn promised immediate relief. A second call to Kayani's commanding offi cer would summon Coast Guard rescue craft for those still at sea, but the Pakistan Coast Guard had no air–sea rescue choppers, just Chinese-built corvettes and patrol boats that wouldn't arrive until mid-morning. Moore turned his attention back on the surf, studying every wave, searching for the survivors. Five minutes. Ten. Nothing. Not a soul. Between the blood and body parts strewn across the water like some ungodly stew, it was a safe bet that the sharks had come. And quickly. That, coupled with the injuries of the other survivors, may have been too much for them. It took another half-hour before Moore spotted the fi rst body rising up on a wave like a piece of driftwood. Many others would follow. 13 More than an hour passed before an Mi-17 appeared in the northwest sky, its twin turbines roaring, its rotors whomping and echoing off the hillsides. The chopper had been specifi cally designed by the Soviets for their war in Afghanistan and had become symbolic of that confl ict: Goliaths of the sky slain by slingshots. The Pakistan Army had nearly one hundred Mi-17s in their inventory, a trivial detail Moore knew because he'd been a passenger aboard them a few times and had overheard a pilot griping about how he was stuck fl ying a Russian pile of junk that broke down every other fl ight and that the Pakistan Army had almost a hundred fl ying junkyards. Slightly unnerved, Moore boarded the Mi-17 and was fl own with Kayani to the Sindh Government Hospital in Liaquatabad Town, a suburb of Karachi. While en route, the fl ight medics administered painkillers, and Kayani's wide-eyed grimace turned to a more peaceful stare. It was sunrise by the time they touched down. Moore stepped out of the hospital's elevator on the second fl oor and ducked into Kayani's room. They'd been at the hospital for about an hour now. The lieutenant would have a nice battle scar to help him get laid. Both men had been severely dehydrated when they'd come ashore, and an IV drip had been jabbed in the lieutenant's left arm. 14 "How are you feeling? Kayani reached up and touched the bandage on his head. "I still have a headache. " It'll pass. " I couldn't have swum back. " Moore nodded. "You got hit hard, and you lost some blood. " I don't know what to say. Thank you is not enough. " Moore took a long pull on the bottle of water given to him by one of the nurses. "Hey, forget it. Movement in the doorway drew Moore's attention. That was Douglas Stone, a colleague from the Agency, who stroked his mottled gray beard and stared at Moore above the rim of his glasses. "I have to go. Moore said. "Mr. Fredrickson, wait. " Moore frowned. "Is there a way I can contact you? "Sure, why? Kayani looked to Stone and pursed his lips. "Oh, he's okay. A good friend. " The lieutenant hesitated a few seconds more, then said, I just want to thank you. somehow. " Moore used a tablet and pen on the tray table to scribble down an e-mail address. The lieutenant clutched the paper tightly in his palm. "I'll be in touch. " Moore shrugged. "Okay. " He headed out into the hallway, turned, then marched forcefully away from Stone, speaking through his teeth. "So, Doug, tell me—just what the fuck happened? 15 "I know, I know. Stone had deployed his usual calming tone, but Moore would have none of that, not now. "We assured the Indians that the rendezvous would be clear. They had to cross into Pakistan territorial waters. They were very concerned about that. " We were told the Pakistanis were taking care of everything. " Who dropped the ball? "They're telling us their submarine commander never received any orders to remain at the pier. Somebody forgot to issue them. He made his usual patrol and thought he'd sailed into some kind of engagement. According to him, he sent out multiple challenges without response. " Moore snickered. "Well, it's not like we were looking for him—and when we did see him, it was already too late. " The commander also reported that he saw the Indians taking prisoners on their deck. " So he was ready to fi re on his own people, too? "Who knows. " Moore stopped dead in his tracks, whirled, and gaped at the man. "The only prisoner they had was our guy. " Hey, Max, I know where you're coming from. " Let's go swim three miles. Then you'll know. " Stone removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "Look, it could be worse. We could be Slater and O'Hara and have to fi gure how to apologize to the Indians while making sure they don't nuke Islamabad. " That'd be nice—because I'm headed there now. He sounds like someone off the muppets. At 1:15 he said like a plane lol. 2:36 and this guy literally makes happiness look easily attainable. I can imagine this man was helping others till the exact moment of his untimely death. 28 yrs ago today in 1991 i lost my grandma to cancer and 10 yrs later in 2001 one of the the greatest tragedies ive seen in my life time happened on this day as well. 18 yrs ago i was a 15 yr old junior in high school, I remember watching this live at school. Very gut wrenching and heartbreaking. As a teen i was thinking, if this was going to b my end i would want to die with my mother and siblings. And then a half hr later my mom came to pick me up and said the same thing i was thinking. 18 yrs later, now a mother myself as i show my children the videos and pictures that i have, and seeing the horror in their faces makes me feel like that 15 yr old scared girl all over again. Today is a time to remember and celebrate those lost and to to reflect on our past, present and future. Teach ur children to love and not hate. Teach them to cherish and appreciate who is in their lives because they can b here today and gone tomorrow. never forget this day. R.I.P. TO THE 2,977 SOULS lost that day and my grandma Rebecca.

Hi Andres I wonder at 3:51 was that Christine Olender. She worked on WOW as the assistant general manager and was killed in the attacks that day. Free Stream Windows on the world in 80. Free stream windows on the world games. Updated What Mixer lacks in users and features, it makes up for in sheer ease of use. Brad Chacos/IDG Today's Best Tech Deals Picked by PCWorld's Editors Top Deals On Great Products Picked by Techconnect's Editors After starting as a niche beloved only by the most hardcore geeks and gamers, broadcasting video games has finally hit the mainstream—so mainstream, in fact, that its now baked directly into Windows itself. But while the Windows 10 Creators Update embraces the streaming craze, you wont find support for Twitch or YouTube. Instead, the operating system offers native broadcasting support for Mixer, the streaming service Microsoft acquired  in late 2016. That may bum out streamers with audiences on established platforms, but what Mixer lacks in users and features, it makes up for in sheer ease of use—something sorely lacking elsewhere. But well talk about that later! Heres how to start streaming your PC games with Mixer in the Windows 10 Creators Update. Before you Mixer stream Mixer makes it easy to hop into a broadcast in mere seconds, defaulting to basic settings that work well for the masses. If you want to tinker with the technical aspects of your stream, though, its best to take a few minutes to adjust Mixers stream quality settings before you fire up your game. (Its not necessary, though, so feel free to skip this section entirely if you want to just start streaming right now. Brad Chacos/IDG To do so, head to Start > Settings > Gaming, where youll find one of the Windows 10 Creators Updates  best new features: a hub dedicated to gaming options. Select the Broadcasting tab in the left-hand options to bring up Mixers settings. Brad Chacos/IDG Windows 10s native Mixer broadcasting options. You, well, wont find much. Its incredibly, uh, streamlined compared to OBS and other popular PC broadcasting software. You cant change the codec used to encode the stream, or the bitrate quality, or anything else about the streams visuals. There are only a handful of audio quality settings. Its awfully console-like, which makes sense as Mixer is designed to work on the Xbox One as well, but the services bare-bones nature might be a turn-off to some PC users. That said, the extreme simplicity and ease of use may appeal to virgin broadcasters who are just dipping their toes into streaming, or folks who loathe the idea of wading through technical details. Brad Chacos/IDG When you activate your webcam, a preview appears. Mixer streaming does not show you on-camera or broadcast the audio feed of your microphone by default. That interactivitys the core conceit of game streaming, so Id suggest activating your mic at the very least. You can also tinker with the audio quality to improve or decrease the fidelity of your words (at the expense of system resources and data needs. Id suggest leaving the default settings for microphone and system volume alone unless you discover a concrete reason to change them. If you wind up wanting to tweak those, however, youll have to return to the Gaming settings; theres no way to change them mid-game or with the Game Bar. But enough about options. Lets start streaming! Start your Mixer stream Starting a Mixer stream is easy-peasy, and it works with any game—not just Windows Store games. Brad Chacos/IDG Before you start Mixer streaming from the Game Bar, you can tinker with your audio broadcast settings for the game youre playing. To start a stream, summon Windows 10s Game Bar by pressing Windows + G or the Xbox button on your Xbox controller. If you didnt bother configuring your default options in the Gaming section, you can adjust some of them from right inside the Game Bar by clicking the Settings cog and navigating to the Broadcast and Audio tabs. Kick off a stream by clicking the new-to-the-Creators-Update Broadcast button on the Game Bar. Youll need to agree to Mixers terms of use before youre dumped into the broadcast setup. Brad Chacos/IDG Mixers broadcast setup process is just as streamlined as its settings. Again, everythings pretty streamlined here. The setup allows you to manually select to activate your microphone or camera. If you decide to show yourself to the world, you can cycle through various on-screen positions for the camera output. You can also opt to stream just the game, or your entire Windows desktop if you plan on hopping between programs mid-stream. You stream broadcasts to your Mixer channel (which is created automatically under your Xbox Live handle the first time you stream) as well as your Xbox Live activity feed, where your Xbox friends will see it and be able to join in. Thats it. Click Start broadcast and youre live to the masses. I said it was simple! Brad Chacos/IDG For the Horde! Wait, wrong game... Once youre streaming, a thin Mixer options bar will appear onscreen where you chose to overlay the camera position, even if youre not streaming your webcam. The options on the bar are basic—you can pause or stop the stream, disable or enable your camera and mic on the fly, or click the icon of two overlapping rectangles to cycle through a visual of your running stream, a chat screen, or neither. Clicking and holding the icon of two horizontal bars, on the right edge of the Mixer options bar, lets you manually reposition the overlay anywhere you want onscreen. Finally, the tool also displays how long your streams been live, and how many people are currently watching it. Thats about all there is to broadcasting games with the Windows 10 Creators Updates native Mixer support. There are just three minor quibbles to mention. First, youll see a small gaming performance hit while youre streaming, as encoding the video and sending it out to the world takes system resources. Second, you shouldnt use Windows 10s Game Mode while youre streaming. Game Mode improves game performance by limiting how much CPU and GPU power Windows grants to other applications and processes, and Mixer streaming needs those. You dont want to choke it. Microsoft Dont use Windows 10s Game Mode while youre streaming with Mixer. Finally, Mixer wont work if Skype is active on your system. Not even mid-call, just open. I thought it was a bug, but a quick Google search revealed that its intentional behavior. Microsoft told Ars Technica that Mixers disabled when Skype or a handful of other communications apps are active “because of concerns about people broadcasting their private communications by accident, ” according to Ars. IMPORTANT UPDATE:  Xbox PR reached out to me on April 13 to say Microsoft recently pushed out a patch that “rectified the issue of Mixer broadcasting not functioning properly when Skype is open. ” Thats dumb. Sure, Discord and TeamSpeak may be the go-to communications apps for many gamers, but many others still rely on Skype for audio and text chats while playing. Case in point: I noticed this flaw—and thats what it is—because I had Skype open to see if a buddy could check out my stream quality. Heres hoping Microsoft patches this limitation sooner rather than later.  Bottom line Mixer makes game streaming simple. Thats something to be praised in general—OBS can be an arcane labyrinth of options to newcomers—and doubly so in a tool thats baked right into an operating system. Some people are undoubtedly going to love it, especially folks who own Xbox consoles and are already firmly entrenched in the Xbox Live ecosystem. Brad Chacos/IDG Mixers simplicity could be a hit with kids looking to become the next  Minecraft superstar. Mixer offers some compelling features that competing services should pay attention to. Again, because it cant be said enough, Windows 10s native game broadcasting is incredibly simple to use. Mixer also offers an infinitesimal stream delay thanks to its “ Faster than light ” technology, which means you and your audience can converse with no lag, unlike on competing platforms. Its wonderful. Mixers gamification aspects make watching streams on its standalone site fun! And outside of the confines of Windows 10s native Game Bar, Mixer supports beefier tools for PC gamers, such as OBS and XSplit. Mixers going to have its work cut out trying to upset Twitch and YouTube on the PC, though. Not only do those services have audiences that utterly dwarf Mixer, which makes it more likely for random viewers to surf into your stream, but Mixer also focuses on broadcasting to your Xbox Live friends feed. While Microsofts Play Anywhere initiative and Windows 10s native Xbox integration are pushing Windows and Xbox closer together, many—most, Id wager—dedicated PC gamers never bother diving into Xbox Live. The vast majority of PC games are on Steam and Uplay and Origin, with precious few in the Windows Store. Theres simply no reason to open the Xbox app on your PC unless youre playing Gears of War 4 or Forza Horizon 3. Mixers a fantastic option for getting started with streaming. But if you dont mind brushing up on those beefier tools, and you want to broadcast your games to a large audience of PC gamers rather than just your Xbox friends, you might want to read PCWorlds beginners guide to  Twitch streaming. Updated What to do when your PC is in one room, and your HDTV is in another. Lincoln Spector Today's Best Tech Deals Picked by PCWorld's Editors Top Deals On Great Products Picked by Techconnect's Editors Table of Contents Show More Say you have a nice collection of media on your PC in one room, but youd like to be able to view it on your nice big TV in another room. Windows offers a simple way to do that over Wi-Fi.  Theres actually an open standard for sharing media files across a home network. Its called the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) and you probably already have everything you need to use it. Theres also a second, and newer, standard called Miracast that will be of particular note to Windows 10 users. First, some definitions for DLNA: The device that sends the stream—such as a PC—is the DLNA server. The device that receives the stream—such as an HDTV or something connected to the TV—is the DLNA renderer (I really hate that term; player or receiver would be much friendlier. Both devices must be on the same network. Setting up a DLNA server on Windows Assuming that your PC is running Windows 7 or higher, it can serve your media without additional software. Windows Media Player (WMP) is, among other things, a DLNA server, but you have to enable it first. IDG In WMP 12, select Stream > Turn on media streaming from the menu bar at the top. IDG In Windows 10, youll now see a permissions dialog box. Click  Turn on media streaming  one more time. Ian Paul/IDG This brings you to another dialog box that allows you to control which devices on the network can receive the stream.  Dont worry about this box at the moment. Just click OK  at the bottom, but   you may want to return to it at another time. You can also find DLNA servers for other operating systems, including Android, iOS, Mac OS X, and Linux. Consumer network-attached storage (NAS) systems almost always contain DLNA server software as well. Windows 10, Miracast, and DLNA If you have a Windows 10 PC theres an extra feature you can try. The above process with Windows Media Player will still work, but Microsoft has also built streaming, or casting, right into the operating system via DLNA and Miracast. Casting has been present in Windows since version 8. 1; however, were only going to cover Windows 10 here. Using this feature is pretty straightforward as long as you have a DLNA- or Miracast-compatible device. IDG Right-click on media in Windows 10 to cast it. If youve ever used a Chromecast, then the process of casting from Windows 10 will be familiar. Right-click on a video or other piece of media on your PC. From the right-click context menu select  Cast to Device. Youll then see the devices on your local network that you can cast to. Pick one and youre done. Ian Paul/IDG Cast from Edge with a few clicks. Things work similarly in Microsoft Edge. Open the browser, select the webpage you want to cast such as a YouTube video. Then in the upper-right corner select the More options menu (the three horizontal dots) and select Cast media to device.  After that a Windows 8-style side panel will appear on the right with available devices.  Set up DLNA-compatible media players The vast majority of network-capable HDTVs, Blu-ray players, and game consoles can render DLNA. Check your devices home screen for music, pictures, and video options. When you select one of these, youll likely get a list of DLNA servers currently running on the home network. From here, you simply select the media file you want to stream. If you dont see any DLNA servers, check the device manual for DLNA support.  Ian Paul/IDG BubbleUPnP on an Android phone Alternately, with the right apps, you can turn a Chromecast or a Roku into a DLNA renderer. If you have a Chromecast and an Android phone, download the free Android app BubbleUPnP. The apps setup wizard will recommend installing its own server on your PC, but you dont have to. That said, the app doesnt play well with Windows Media Player so you may have no choice. Next, open the menu on the left under the “hamburger” menu icon, and under Renderer select the device that will receive the content. Then under Library select the DLNA server that has the media you want, and choose your content. In my case, I can choose from my PCs hard drive, as well as my Plex Media Server. Your content should now start playing on your TV via the Chromecast. Note that while MP4 files should work without a hitch, sometimes MKV files may not play nicely even with BubbleUPnPs server installed on your PC. Things are much simpler with a Roku. Just download the Roku Media Player channel, and youll have clear and simple access to the media on your PC. Thats how you stream content from your PC to your TV the standard way. To learn about other methods for getting content on your TV, see  TechHives Cord-Cutter Confidential column. Also check out TechHives best streaming devices hub for buying information about the Apple TV, Roku, and other devices for watching locally storied content on your TV, as well as online streaming services. Windows on the World, despite the fact that it takes place in the weeks following the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, is a film that is urgently for our time. It is a hero's journey of a son trying to find his father in that grief-stricken landscape and the characters stand in for the millions of immigrants, legal and illegal, who contribute in their everyday lives, to the American landscape. The film seeks to counter the narrative that's all-too-prevalent in today's political and media landscape by telling a story set in America's biggest and most diverse city, at its darkest time. The script by playwright and novelist Robert Mailer Anderson (who also produced the film) is wise and completely engaging; he creates indelible characters who are ultimately inspiring and uplifting. Edward James Olmos gives what he considers to be the performance of a lifetime, and the rest of the cast is terrific as well-with a special shout-out to Glynn Turman. The direction, by Olmos's son Michael, is sure-handed, getting terrific performances from his cast, including his father, in this father-son story, and it's beautifully lensed. The music, including jazz and a title track written by Anderson, is pitch-perfect, supporting the story without getting in the way. This film should be seen by everybody-and I'm sure it will be in mainstream distribution soon, as this is a time when, although the major studios may have turned their backs on substance, terrific indie films like this one have many other possible venues. If you can't see it at a film festival, like I did, keep a keen eye out for it. Terrific and inspiring.

Then load it up with the video or other supported media file (i. e. FLAC or APE) you want to play. From the VLC toolbar go to Playback > Renderer and choose your Chromecast device. If you dont see it listed in the menu, click Scan to find it. Keep in mind that your mileage may vary with this. While the feature is available, Ive had mixed results in my testing. Ive tested it using two different Windows 10 systems and two different Chromecast devices, and multiple audio and video formats – even physical discs. The results are random and sometimes the audio or video just wouldnt play to the Chromecast. Its also worth noting that the first time you try it, you might get a message from your Windows firewall asking for permission to send the signal through. Cast from Android You can also stream from VLC 3. 0 on Android as well. This might seem redundant since its all Google, and you can cast anything from your Android device to Chromecast. But, since VLC can play virtually any media file format you throw at it, this ability can come in handy if you have a local file on your phone you need to play. Just select media content and tap the “cast” button at the top and choose the Chromecast you want to send it to. Once its playing you can swipe down on the notification shade and control playback from there, too. If youre not a VLC user, there are other ways to beam your local files from Windows to your Chromecast. One of my favorite free utilities for it is Videostream. And, weve covered some cool tricks using the Chrome browser on Windows 10. For more on that, read our article: How to Play Local Media Files from Windows PC to Chromecast.

I am from India i was their with my uncle nearby everyone heard an explosion no one understood what happened until all heard screams and the chunks from building were falling down on street then all started running. Everyone was screaming. Some came under the chunk and were stuck and it was all chaos. Screams, confusion amd chaos everywhere i saw bravery of local police and firefighters. And in a few minutes dust was everywhere. After that it's was an environment of chaos for immigrants especially Muslims and many people even considered me Muslim(not against Islam or any religion) and blamed me for that but I understand. Then there were protests and chaos for many days. My uncle told me not to get out of house. Few days laater we were called from a nearby police station and we went there and there were all the immigrants from other countries. And they were asking why are you here and whats the purpose of your visit and what have you done in past days and all that. Even my neighbours used to see me like i am a terrorist and all as people didn't knew what hindu is and all that and also coz I look like middle eastern. I remember all of it and it was crazy and very bad for families of victims and i remember that few children also died.

An annuity is a financial tool that not only helps you plan your retirement but also ensures financial security for life. Annuities are sold by insurance companies or financial institutions and are essentially investment products in which you invest a lump sum and receive scheduled pay outs for a period of time or in some cases, for life. Before purchasing or investing in an annuity, it is crucial to learn which product suits your lifestyle, financial requirements, and care needs. If you have already invested in an annuity, you can sell your payments to be financially independent and meet your current expenses. To help you make an informed decision, you require to understand the different types of annuities available in the market. Annuities are essentially of five types. They are: Fixed: Fixed annuities are designed to suit the needs of retirees who aim to live on a modest but guaranteed income. Fixed annuities are investments that offer an interest and are typically issued by insurance companies or banks. You can chose whether you wish withdraw an income immediately or can defer it to a later life stage. Variable: Variable annuities allow you to choose from a wide range of mutual funds, which can be used to guarantee an income irrespective of how the worlds markets perform. If youre looking at capital appreciation in addition to a guaranteed income, a variable annuity is for you. Fixed Indexed: Do you wish to invest in an annuity that combines fixed and variable features? If yes, the fixed indexed annuity is an ideal choice. A fixed indexed annuity offers you a guaranteed income and allows you to participate in the market. Deferred: A deferred annuity provides you with an income stream only from the date determined by you. By investing in a deferred annuity you not only increase your savings but also your future income. This type of annuity is ideal for retirees who desire to have a guaranteed income in the future. Immediate: The mechanisms of an immediate annuity are very similar to an insurance policy. Instead of paying monthly premiums, an immediate annuity will need a lump-sum payment, which provides a regular income for life starting immediately. Why would you sell an annuity? Whether you need to pay for a medical emergency or wish to buy a new home, selling your annuity can help you control your finances and avoid debt. If youre keen on selling your annuity payments, you should find out about your selling options. There are two major ways of selling your annuity, which are partial surrender and complete selling. Partial surrender: If you wish to meet an immediate expense such as an expensive hospital bill, withdrawing from your annuity can be a solution. If youre already receiving an income from your annuities, you cannot make a withdrawal. But, if you have invested in a deferred annuity, you will be able to withdraw a lump sum from your account. If the withdrawal amount exceeds the limit set by your insurance company, you may have to pay surrender fees. Selling in entirety: If you feel you have a need that a partial withdrawal cannot meet, selling your entire annuity can be of help. You can sell all your annuity payments to a third-party settlement purchasing company, which will provide you with a lump sum amount. You may not have to pay surrender charges if you sell your annuity payments. Safe ways of selling annuity payments If youre planning to sell your entire annuity, you would first need to get in touch with an annuity buyer, who can provide you with impartial advice with regards to your financial situation. Often, dealing with insurance companies on the selling of annuity payments can be stressful; which is why finding the right buyer is important. All annuity sales are governed by the Federal law, which ensures that you receive an impartial hearing. An annuity buyer will represent you to the insurance company and the court. The buyer will also manage all the paper work required in addition to ensuring the changes you desire are implemented. Once both you and the insurance company authorize a sale, approved by the court, the annuity buyer can deposit the lump sum into your account or issue you a check. There are many external factors that may impact the selling of annuity payments, which include tax implications, value of the annuity and the discount rates applicable. In most cases, you may be required to sell your annuity at a discounted rate to ensure a sale. The discount rate is determined by possible future interest rates and the current value of your annuity. In addition to determining the exact value of your investment, you will also need to be aware of the tax implications involved. The duration of the selling process depends on the court and the judge, which varies in every location. When the court approves the sale, you can be sure of receiving a payment within 72 hours. You may wish to sell your annuity if: You need to pay off a loan Buy a new home Start a business Buy a new vehicle Pay for a childs college fees Medical expenses Long-term care Loss of employment Paying off debts Inherited annuity Suffering from injuries Selling annuity payments can spell the end of financial troubles. Why wait and put your life on hold when you can get it back on track by selling your annuity payments.

I would love to tell every customer about 1) the resale price maintenance, which is special in Germany... That means, one can't get a book cheaper on the internet or in a supermarket. This is important for small bookstores and 2) that we can order a book today and that we'll have it in the store TOMORROW, so it's even faster than the internet and 3) that its important to support local bookstores, otherwise there won't be much more bookstores soon. Ladies and gentlemen, STEPHEN STILLS. The booksellers download torrent free. She cant even afford a nice vacation with all the prostitution money. Credit. Sim Chi Yin for The New York Times Feature As Chinas Xi Jinping consolidates power, owners of Hong Kong bookstores trafficking in banned books find themselves playing a very dangerous game. The bookseller Lam Wing-kee in Hong Kong. Sim Chi Yin for The New York Times W hen the police officer didnt laugh, Lam Wing-kee knew he was in trouble. In his two decades as owner and manager of Hong Kongs Causeway Bay Books, Lam had honed a carefully nonchalant routine when caught smuggling books into mainland China: apologize, claim ignorance, offer a cigarette to the officers, crack a joke. For most of his career, the routine was foolproof. Thin and wiry, with an unruly pouf of side-swept gray hair and a wisp of mustache, Lam was carrying a wide mix of books that day: breathless political thrillers, bodice-rippers and a handful of dry historical tomes. The works had only two things in common: Readers hungered for them, and each had been designated contraband by the Communist Partys Central Leading Group for Propaganda and Ideology. For decades, Lams bookstore had thrived despite the ban — or maybe because of it. Operating just 20 miles from the mainland city of Shenzhen, in a tiny storefront sandwiched between a pharmacy and an upscale lingerie store, Causeway was a destination for Chinese tourists, seasoned local politicians and even, surreptitiously, Communist Party members themselves, anyone hoping for a peek inside the purges, intraparty feuding and silent coups that are scrubbed from official histories. Lam was an expert on what separated the good banned books from the bad, the merely scandalous from the outright sensational. He found books that toed the line between rumor and reality. Other retailers avoided the mainland market, but through years of trial and error, Lam had perfected a series of tricks to help his books avoid detection. He shipped only to busy ports, where packages were less likely to be checked. He slipped on false dust covers. Lam was stopped only once, in 2012. By the end of that six-hour interrogation, he was chatting with the officers like old friends and sent home with a warning. On Oct. 24, 2015, his routine veered off script. He had just entered the customs inspection area between Hong Kong and the mainland when he was ushered into a corner of the border checkpoint. The gate in front of him opened, and a phalanx of 30 officers rushed in, surrounding him; they refused to answer his panicked questions. A van pulled up, and they pushed him inside. Lam soon found himself in a police station, staring at an officer. “Boss Lam, ” the officer cooed with a grin. Lam asked what was happening. “Dont worry, ” Lam recalls the officer saying. “If the case were serious, we wouldve beaten you on the way here. ” Across the table, Lam recognized one of the officers from his run-in at the same border crossing three years earlier. His name was Li. Beside him sat an older man who identified himself as a member of the national police and who handled the questioning. Why were you bringing books across the border? he asked. “Im a bookseller, ” Lam responded. “Theres no treason in having books while crossing the border. ” Li answered with an icy glare. Partway through the questioning, the older officer got up for a break, leaving Lam alone with Li. The two men sat in awkward silence until Lam, reaching for the conviviality of their last encounter, offered a joke. Li exploded. Lam, he said, was trying to disrupt the Chinese system, and as part of a special investigative unit, it was his job to dismantle Hong Kongs illicit publishing scene once and for all. Lam was stunned into silence. Over the next eight months, Lam would find himself the unwitting central character in a saga that would hardly feel out of place in one of his thrillers. His ordeal marked the beginning of a Chinese effort to reach beyond the mainland to silence the countrys critics or their enablers no matter where they were or what form that criticism took. Following his arrest, China has seized a Hong Kong billionaire from the citys Four Seasons Hotel, spiriting him away in a wheelchair with his head covered by a blanket; blocked a local democracy activist from entering Thailand for a conference; and repatriated and imprisoned Muslim Chinese students who had been in Egypt. The campaign signaled the dawn of a new era in Chinese power, both at home and abroad. At a national Communist Party congress in October 2017, President Xi Jinping made clear the partys expansive vision of control. “The party exercises overall leadership over all areas of endeavor in every part of the country, ” he told delegates. No corner of society was out of reach. Even books — “socialist literature, ” in Xis words — must extol “our party, our country, our people and our heroes. ” A few months later, the government erased presidential term limits, opening the way for Xi to rule indefinitely, and put control of all print media, including books, in the hands of the Communist Partys Central Propaganda Department. The Chinese government has long sought to shape and control information, but the scope and intensity of this effort was something new — and its origins could be traced to a 61-year-old bookseller and a few stacks of forbidden titles. “I never expected anything like this, just as a poor man never dreams of striking it rich overnight, ” Lam said. Throughout his ordeal, he had to remind himself that in China, as in his books, the line between the outlandish and the ordinary is often too thin to register. “Contemporary China, ” he said, “is an absurd country. ” Ask a publisher in Hong Kong and he or she will tell you that the phrase “banned books” is something of a misnomer. No one within Hong Kong, a semiautonomous Chinese territory, wanted to squash the publishing industry. That dictate came from Beijing and held limited legal force in Hong Kong. For 60 years the city had protection from direct interference, first as a British colony and then, since 1997, under an agreement with Beijing known as “One Country, Two Systems. ” The first important book to be banned was by Chang Kuo-tao, a founder of the Chinese Communist Party and a Red Army general who was both a colleague and competitor of Mao Zedong. Mao ousted him during the power struggles of the 1930s, and Chang settled just across the border in Hong Kong. After years in exile, living in poverty and anonymity, he was discovered by American researchers — still the same handsome, square-jawed man he had been in his youth — and they provided him with a stipend to translate and publish his memoirs. Image Credit. Sim Chi Yin for The New York Times Changs autobiography, released in Hong Kong in the late 1960s, offered a glimpse into the beliefs, motivations and obsessions of Mao at a time when the mainland was almost totally inaccessible to outsiders. Chang portrayed Mao as a ruthless leader, paranoid and inured to the use of violence in pursuit of his goals. Mainland censors denounced the book almost immediately, but in Hong Kong, it was an instant best seller. Aided by an air of forbidden allure and the indication of a huge, untapped market, an industry of similar books began to form. Bao Pu, the founder and publisher of New Century Press, is one of Hong Kongs most respected independent publishers. When I visited him in November, he found his copy of Changs book, “My Memories, ” easily, even amid the rows of overflowing shelves that house his personal collection. “Here it is, ” he said, carefully turning the yellowed pages. “The very first banned book. ” Changs memoirs spawned an entire subgenre of Mao biographies, with onetime insiders racing to share every detail of their experience with Communist Chinas revered founder. Bao reached for a title written by Maos longtime personal physician. “This was the first big banned book after the reforms in the 1980s, ” he said, handing me a red-and-black hardcover titled “The Private Life of Chairman Mao, ” published in 1994. The book gave an insiders account of party politics and high-level scheming, but it was the description of Maos sexual interests that readers found irresistible. “It was the first time the mainland-owned stores refused a book, and the independent bookstores made a killing, ” Bao said. I thumbed through its pages of Chinese text: At 67, Mao was past his original projection for the age at which sexual activity stops but, curiously, only then did his complaints of impotence cease altogether. It was then that he became an adherent of Daoist sexual practices, which gave him an excuse to pursue sex not only for pleasure but also to extend his life. He was happiest and most satisfied with several young women simultaneously sharing his bed. He encouraged his sexual partners to introduce him to others for shared orgies, supposedly in the interest of his longevity and strength. In Baos library, you could read an alternate history of China, each neatly arranged stack a turning point in modern Chinese politics. The Chinese elite “cant leak out information in official channels, ” says Bruce Lui, a senior lecturer in the Department of Journalism at Hong Kong Baptist University. “So what they can do is use Hong Kong as a platform” to spread gossip anonymously, praise their own camp and belittle opponents. Hong Kongs publishing houses became an extension of the political battlefield in Beijing. In 1966, at the start of the decade-long spasm of violence and mass purges known as the Cultural Revolution, universities were closed and millions of supposed bourgeois sympathizers were “sent down” to the countryside for re-education through labor. Dissidents and defectors smuggled out pamphlets, firsthand accounts and other forbidden materials, which circulated in Hong Kong and beyond. During the crackdown that followed the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, Hong Kongs magazines, newspapers and bookstores were once again a haven for “nonofficial” information. In Baos repository, there was an entire shelf devoted to liu si, “6-4, ” a reference in Mandarin to the date of the Tiananmen crackdown. For Bao, that shelf alone proved the worth of the industry. He was a college student in Beijing in 1989 and witnessed the whitewashing that followed the Tiananmen protests. “I hate it when history is lost or revised away, ” he told me. “The erasure of what happened at Tiananmen is something I wont allow. Itll happen over my dead body. ” One memoir, by a high-ranking Communist official who had been ousted and placed under house arrest for backing the demands of the student demonstrators, revealed in a firsthand account how the leadership grappled with what to do as the protests grew more popular and widespread: In the end, Deng Xiaoping made the final decision. He said: “Since there is no way to back down without the situation spiraling completely out of control, the decision is to move troops into Beijing and impose martial law. ”. On the night of June 3, while sitting in the courtyard with my family, I heard intense gunfire. A tragedy to shock the world had not been averted and was happening after all. Alongside the scholarly works and memoirs on Baos shelves were tawdrier titles, many of them simply compilations of online gossip. For some members of Hong Kongs literati, these books were a stain on the citys reputation. Bao had no interest in publishing fictitious tales of sex and corruption, but he saw a larger purpose in their plotlines. “They reach a different audience, and in their rumor-mongering, they share glimpses of truth, ” he said, as he traced his finger across the spine of a salacious, anonymously published work. “They tell the Chinese people that their leaders arent saints, ” he said. “Theyre just like you and me — theyre petty, they make mistakes, they dont act morally. ” Xi Jinping himself was a popular target in titles like “Xi Jinping and His Lovers, ” which claimed to reveal the president in his most intimate moments: Outside the door, Lingling shouts, “Big brother Xi, please help me, Im in the kitchen cooking dumplings. ” Xi Jinping hurriedly runs out, enters the kitchen and embraces Ke Lingling. “My father will be back soon. My father is about to be rehabilitated. ” Lingling quickly pushes him away, saying, “Oh, my, the way you embraced me, others would tease us. ” Bao grew somber as he looked over his collection. After Lams disappearance, he said, the mainland had cracked down on banned books with its full might. He knew from his Tiananmen experience what that meant. “There is no way to resist, ” he said. “Except to die. ” The morning after his interrogation, Lam was blindfolded, handcuffed and put on a train for an unknown destination. His captors didnt say a word. When the train came to a halt 13 hours later, Lams escorts shoved him into a car and drove him to a nearby building, where they removed his hat, blindfold and glasses. He took stock of his situation: He was in an unknown location in an unknown city, being held by officers whose identity and affiliation he could not ascertain. He still hadnt been charged with a crime. A doctor arrived to perform a cursory health check. Lam was shown to a cell with a bed and a desk, handed a change of clothes and told to go to sleep. Lying awake, Lam wondered whether anyone in Hong Kong realized he was missing. What would his family think? Who would tell his ex-wife or his girlfriend in Shenzhen? For years, Lam had owned and managed his bookstore independently, but he had recently sold the shop to a publishing house — maybe his predicament had something to do with their titles? The publishing house, called Mighty Current Media, entered the banned-books market in 2012, with impeccable timing. An ambitious Central Politburo member named Bo Xilai, who some China-watchers thought could be the countrys next leader — ahead of the rising star Xi Jinping — had been implicated, along with his wife, in the murder of a British businessman named Neil Heywood in a Chongqing hotel room. In less than two years, Bo was denounced, demoted and expelled from the party. His wife was convicted of murder and Bo of corruption. A potential future president had been deposed with the world watching. For Hong Kong publishers, Bos downfall was a dream: a real-life soap opera playing out at the very pinnacle of Chinese power. As the market for information on Bo reached a frenzied peak, Mighty Current churned out books chronicling every new development in the scandal. In just one year, there were more than 100 books published in Hong Kong about him, with Mighty Current accounting for half. Bookstores reported sales of 300 copies a day. Mighty Currents co-owner, Gui Minhai, is believed to have earned more than 1 million in 2013 alone. He bought houses, cars and a property in a Thai resort town. Lams bookstore was filled with eager new customers, and in 2014 a group from Mighty Current came inquiring about the store in a bid to combine their prolific publishing output with the shops reputation and large customer base. As part of the deal, Lam agreed to stay on as manager — just until he could retire. At sunrise, Lam was questioned by a tall, dour man named Shi. Who were Lams customers? What did they buy? How often did they come in? Later that day, he was presented with forms waiving his right to a lawyer and to contact his family. Still unaware of the severity of his situation, Lam signed them, hoping his cooperation might shorten his detention. The interrogations by Shi and another official continued. As days turned into weeks, Lam began to mark time by secretly pulling a thread off his orange jacket and tying one knot in the string each day. He pretended to use the toilet in his cell in order to climb atop the seat and peer out the window at a few distant hilltops and a handful of nearby buildings, but he saw nothing that would answer the question of where he was being held. In January 2016, more than two months after he began counting the length of his detention, Lam was informed of the charge against him: “illegal sales of books. ” Eventually, the questions shifted to Mighty Currents anonymous authors. Sitting across from Lam, his interrogators produced a stack of banned books, all published by Mighty Current and shipped to China by Lam. One was the companys risqué “Xi Jinping and His Lovers”; another, published in 2013, outlined the partys so-called Seven Taboos, a list of forbidden topics and ideas like “press freedom” and “civil society”; a third book remarkably predicted the ouster of a once-powerful general named Xu Caihou. Who wrote these books? Shi demanded. Lam replied that he was just the bookseller and had never communicated with any of the authors. This was true — most authors requested anonymity from publishers, and it was almost always granted to protect any well-placed sources. Lam had no idea who the authors were. Lams interrogations would end as abruptly as they began, and he would be left alone in the same solitary cell. “From day to night, no one would talk to me, ” he said. “You have a complete disconnection from the outside world. You dont know what will happen. They can do anything to you. ” He grew increasingly desperate. “The wait destroys you. ” In January 2016, unknown to Lam, news of his disappearance spread. Other members of Mighty Currents staff and its owners had also mysteriously vanished. But sitting in his cell, Lam thought he was alone. It was only after several weeks of solitude that he was allowed even a book to pass the time: “Dream of the Red Chamber, ” a classic 18th-century novel. Lams captors wanted him to read something wholesome. That March, more than four months into his detention, Lam met with his interrogator to sign a guilty plea as a precondition for a possible bail arrangement. A few hours later, to his shock, he was put on a train back to Shenzhen, just north of Hong Kong, where he was taken to the Kylin Villa, a sprawling, sumptuous hotel complex usually reserved for foreign dignitaries and high-level delegations from Beijing. The next night, Lam entered an elegant dining room and saw three familiar faces seated at a large circular table — fellow staff members from Mighty Current. Places were set, and the men were served a dinner. The group chose their words carefully. With a guard and three security cameras monitoring every whisper, some topics were tacitly off-limits, like the fate of the one person missing from the table: the co-owner Gui Minhai. As the meal progressed, they established that they had all been held in the city of Ningbo, on Chinas southeastern coast; three, including Lam, on different levels of the same building, and one, the companys other co-owner, Lee Bo, in a secluded villa outside the city. “If we cooperate, ” Lam remembered Lee telling the other men, “well be released very quickly. ” Lee handed each of his colleagues 100, 000 yuan, or roughly 15, 300 — an “exit fee” to mark the dissolution of Mighty Current. As the men departed, they did not hug or shake hands. “There was no need to hug, ” Lam told me. “We already knew how lucky we were to make it to that point. ” Lam was transferred to a new city for the next phase of his detention. There, he was told he would be permitted to return to Hong Kong, but only on the condition that, upon arrival, he report immediately to a police station and tell them his disappearance was all a misunderstanding. He would then go to the home of Lee Bo and pick up a computer containing information on the publishers clients and authors, which he would deliver to China. Only then would Lam be allowed to return to work in his bookstore — but as a mole, the “eyes and ears” of the investigation. He would report who bought which books, documenting each client and sale through text and photos. Lam agreed to the proposal immediately. “After being in prison for so long, ” he said, “I was used to their way of thinking. ” On a June morning, Lam arrived in Hong Kong and reported to a nearby police station, as directed. Local officers were expecting him. He cleared his case — telling the police that he had never been in danger — and headed to Lees home in order to retrieve the computer. There, finally alone, the men spoke freely about their situation. Lam learned that his bookstore had been bought by a man named Chan, who promptly closed it. According to Lam, Lee also described his own capture and how he had been snatched from the parking lot of Mighty Currents warehouse building. He urged Lam to comply with the investigators demands. That night, alone in his hotel room, Lam violated the conditions of his limited release, using his phone to search for news about his case. His eyes widened as he scrolled through news reports — hundreds of them, in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, French and Spanish. He saw his name and the names of his Mighty Current colleagues appear again and again. When Hong Kong learned of his abduction, the revelation sparked fear and anger. Headlines denounced the “unprecedented” capture and Hong Kongs “vanishing freedoms. ” Lam saw photos of thousands of protesters marching through the streets, holding posters of the missing booksellers and demanding their release; Lams shuttered shop had become a site of pilgrimage. He hadnt been forgotten but instead had become the center of a movement. Lam sat up all night, the glow of his phone illuminating each new twist in a case that he had lived through but never understood until now. On the morning he was expected back on the mainland, Lam arrived at the train station with the company computer in his backpack. He paused to smoke a cigarette, then another. Other Mighty Current employees had friends, family or wives on the mainland. “Among all of us, ” Lam told me, “I carried the smallest burden. ” He thought of a short poem by Shu Xiangcheng that he read when he was young: “I have never seen/a knelt reading desk/though Ive seen/men of knowledge on their knees. ” After he finished his third cigarette, he searched for a pay phone to contact a local politician named Albert Ho, who was once a frequent customer at the bookstore. A few hours later, Lam was standing behind a lectern amid hundreds of reporters, photographers and news cameras at the Hong Kong Legislative Council. He spoke for more than an hour, describing his capture and detention. His sudden public appearance riveted Hong Kong. Other Mighty Current employees had been spotted in the city, but none spoke about their experience, and when they did, they parroted the same talking points: that their stay on the Chinese mainland had been voluntary and they were now helping authorities with an important case. It was Lam who put words to what the city had feared and suspected all along. “It can happen to you, too, ” Lam said. At the time of Lams abduction, banned books were everywhere in Hong Kong, sold throughout the city at big-box retailers, specialized cafes and corner convenience stores. Within days of his disappearance, they began to vanish, swept off shelves by mainland-owned shops and frightened independent booksellers. Authors were cowed into silence; presses refused to print sensitive material. The latest act of intimidation occurred this January, when the former owner of Mighty Current, Gui Minhai, who had been granted limited release within China, was abducted again, this time while accompanied by Swedish diplomats on a train to Beijing (he holds Swedish citizenship. When the Swedish government pressed China for details on Guis whereabouts, the authorities refused to acknowledge that he had been taken. Gui soon appeared in a videotaped confession, apologizing for his supposed crimes and saying the diplomats had tricked him into boarding the train. Chinas aggressiveness continues to rattle Hong Kong. “In the past, at least they tried to comply with one country, two systems, ” said James To, a legislator in Hong Kong. “This time they were blatant. ” For many local residents, the lesson was clear. “One day they will come and snatch you back, ” To said. “There is no protection at all. ” When I met Lam one balmy night on the streets of Hong Kong, he radiated a nervous energy, eyes perpetually darting and a cigarette never far from reach. He had thought about leaving Hong Kong and making a new life in Taiwan or the United States, but he didnt want to abandon the city where he was born. Still, he knew that the odds of Hong Kongs remaining autonomous were slim. “I think Hong Kong will return to China, ” he told me. “They have the guns, the jails. We have nothing here in Hong Kong. All we can do is protest peacefully and try to make the world pay attention. ” The police protection that Lam was granted following his return had lapsed by then, and he maintained a studied paranoia about his movements and appearance. “I still have to use different routes and be cautious of everything and everyone around me, ” he told me in a conspiratorial whisper. His old bookstore was blocks away. He pulled on a pollution mask and hat, obscuring his face, and we navigated the thick crowds. On the subway, he waited until the last second to hop off, and never rode the escalator. “I use the elevator, ” he said. “If someone is following me, they have to get in with me. ” We soon reached a small doorway leading to a grimy staircase. On the second floor was Causeway Bay Bookstore, its wooden door hidden behind metal bars. A large yellow sign was filled with the scribbled notes of well-wishers. “Fight for freedom, ” one said. “Come back safe, Mr. Lam, ” read another. There remained an unanswered question at the heart of Lams disappearance: Of all the citys rebellious publishers, why was Mighty Current targeted? Did the company insult Xi personally? Perhaps fittingly, there are few facts, but boundless speculation. “Our popularity could not be allowed, ” Lam told me. “It caught up to us. ” Lam leaned close to peer through the shop window. There were still books inside, scattered on dusty shelves and wooden tables. “I sold over 4, 000 banned books in the two years before I was captured, ” he said. “This bookstore has always been at the pulse of Hong Kong, and it hasnt stopped breathing. ” He longed for the stores resurrection, but it wasnt coming back. “What youre doing is writing an obituary, ” Bao, the New Century publisher, told me when we met in November. “A post-cremation obituary of these books. ” He seemed almost shellshocked by the swiftness of the industrys downfall. “I didnt realize it could all disappear so quickly. ”.

Oh, retail! I hope I never have to step into that role again. When I worked at Rite Aid, we found a used adult diaper on the floor. Someone had ripped open a pack that was on the shelf, peed into a diaper, and dropped both ripped pack and soaked diaper onto the floor and walked out. I just can't. The Booksellers Download torrentz. Im biased, but I think that booksellers are the most generous, thoughtful, and devoted readers we have. Generous, because they read with one eye always on other readers, often making mental lists of specific people to recommend certain titles to. Thoughtful, because we are not algorithms supplying a “you liked this, youll like that” equation; rather, we ask questions, we try to get to the heart of why you liked a specific book, and offer suggestions based on that. And devoted, because who reads more than booksellers? Even in a small store, like the one I own in Point Reyes, our booksellers have read several hundred books this year. That collective experience informs decisions about what we stock and, by extension, what we sell to readers hungry for something that speaks to them. For these reasons and more, I am excited for what I hope becomes an annual tradition on Lit Hub, a series of recaps from booksellers across the world about what books struck a chord with them in the past year. Below is part one of four, coming out between now and the New Year. –Stephen Sparks, Point Reyes Books (and Lit Hub contributing editor) Joshua Bohnsack, Volumes Bookcafe One of the most depressing parts of working as a bookseller is trying to keep up with new releases and contemporary classics. Its part of the job, but limits the amount of what I passionately want to read versus what I want to read to be able to sell or promote. Im constantly afraid Ill fall behind on recommendations, so I started utilizing audiobooks from the library and ALCs from to up the amount of books I could take in. Im a slow reader, so whenever Id go on a run, I would listen to books that I couldnt find the time to read otherwise. Of course, it made for an awkward few hours listening to “The Part About the Murders” in Bolaños 2666 on my go-to running trail. While Ive been a devotee of indie presses, audiobooks gave me the opportunity to read outside my small press comfort zone. Im an avid story collection reader. Some of my favorites this year were Ghost Engine by Christian TeBordo (Bridge Eight Press) Sweet Home by Wendy Erskine (Stinging Fly Press) and Wild Milk by Sabrina Orah Marks (Dorothy.  These collections pushed back against form and structure, and Im a sucker for a good, weird story. As I finished my MFA this year, I spent a lot of time working on a novel for my thesis, so I tried to read a lot of novels to figure out just what a novel is. I noticed some of my favorites of this year could fit the elevator pitch of “feminist wilderness novel” (but so much more) including The Book of X by Sarah Rose Etter (Two Dollar Radio) Hard Mouth by Amanda Goldblatt (Counterpoint) and Stay and Fight by madeline ffitch (FSG. I learned a lot about interiority and style from Halle Butlers The New Me (Penguin) and Chia Chia Lins The Unpassing (FSG. We put out our first novel on my small publishing company, Long Day Press, which was Chase Griffins Florida-man oddity, Whats On the Menu? which pushed me to reconsider how to work with book design in a longer format than the chapbooks we usually publish. I think I read more novels this year than ever before. Article continues after advertisement Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino (Random House) was the big book that lived up to its hype this year. For customers who enjoyed it, I like to suggest Andre Perrys Some of Us Are Very Hungry Now (Two Dollar Radio) as a follow up. Though they are quite different books, they both address contemporary American life in fascinating ways. The other personal essay collection that followed me all year was The Word Pretty by Elissa Gabbert (Black Ocean. Itll make you rethink language, as a close second to the strange little revised edition of Understanding Molecular Typography by H. F. Henderson (Ugly Duckling Presse. This abbreviated textbook convinced me letters are alive, and each word is a moral dilemma. If I never finish my novel, Im blaming it on Henderson. Some of the best work I read all year were pieces in literary magazines. When Im browsing another store, I always try to pick up an issue of something that looks interesting. Lit mags are like mixtapes from the editors. Its encouraging to see a customer pick up a lit mag, and maybe find their new favorite writer, and isnt that a reward of the job? Joshua Bohnsack is the assistant managing editor for TriQuarterly, founding editor for Long Day Press, and received an MFA from Northwestern University. He is the author of Shift Drink (Spork Press 2020) and his work has appeared in The Rumpus, Hobart, SAND, and elsewhere. He lives in Chicago where he works as a bookseller. Lewis Buzbee, bookseller emeritus A couple of months ago, a good friend—novelist and voracious reader—posted a lament about the state of the novel today. They found the novel wanting and pale, and wondered if the novels relevance had ended. I had to disagree, and most vehemently. My own novel reading over the past year had been filled with astonishing new discoveries, a raft of them. So I countered my friend, social-medially, with a short list of novels Id found audacious in their talent, as well as urgently relevant to our confusing times. I remember that Richard Powerss The Overstory topped that list. My friend e-paused, reconsidered. Yes, we finally agreed, the novel was, today, thriving and vibrant and abundant. The novel, of course, has been declared “dead” or “superfluous” for a long time. In the 19th century, the sudden popularity of the bicycle was believed to be the death knell for the novel, as well as all reading. In the early 1960s, op-eds in magazines and newspapers declared the novel long past dead, around the same time they said the same about God. In the 1990s, non-fiction, especially the memoir, was deemed superior, the novels more credible sibling. Then of course came the smartphone, the machine that launched a thousand laments. And yet the novel survives, and based on my reading from last year, thrives. Here are a few—and only a few—of the novels I read last year that gave me great pleasure and changed how I saw the world. The Overstory by Richard Powers. Powers turned the question upside down, not, what can nature give me, but what can I give nature? My view of the world had not been so transformed since I read The Grapes of Wrath when I was 15. I had heard about The Overstory, naturally, but it wasnt until a great stack of the paperback appeared on the front desk of my local shop that I snatched it up. Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo. A swirling, almost Dickensian look at a dozen or more Black British women that is hilarious and heartbreaking, and offered a glimpse of life Id not encountered. The world got bigger after reading this. When it won the Booker Prize, a stack of this beautiful paperback appeared on the same corner of the front counter where Id found The Overstory. I submitted to that seduction in half a second. It wasnt the award, it was the book and its placement. Milkman by Anna Burns. This unsettling account of life under “The Troubles” redefined that place and time for me, but Burnss amazing prose, as if the language were turned inside out to reveal its eventual clarity, showed me how many ways there are of naming the world. This hefty and gorgeous paperback appeared on the feature table just inside the shops entrance, the first place my eye travels when I visit. The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta by John Rollin Ridge and America Is in the Heart by Carlos Bulosan. These overlooked—and unknown to me—classics of California literature sat side by side over shelf talkers on a table deep in the store. Ive read an enormous amount of California lit in my life, but both were new to me, and both refreshed my sense of the scope of my state and its history. It was the shelf talkers that did me in. And the reading of the Bulosan led me to find Elaine Castillos America Is Not the Heart, a riveting story of immigrant life in the Bay Area. One book so often leads to the next. Each one of these novels—and the many more I havent included—opened up the world for me, showed me the familiar in a new light, and the strange with bright clarity. Each of these novels became, as Steinbeck once wrote, “a wedge in [this] readers brain. ” But heres what else these books have in common. I bought them all at my local bookshop, Green Apple Books on the Park in San Francisco. No, its better than that. Not bought them at the bookshop, but because of the bookshop. These were not novels Id set out to find; they were novels that the bookshop set in front of me. And of course, when I say the bookshop did all this, I mean the booksellers. Two social inventions, the novel and the bookshop, both of them declared dead quite often, still work together to keep this reader from complacency, to keep this reader engaged in the world. Its what they do. Once upon a time, I managed two Bay Area bookshops, Upstart Crow in Campbell and Printers Inc. in Palo Alto, both of them, alas, gone now. After that, I was the northern California sales rep for Chronicle Books, and happily visited bookstores every day. Im the author of The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop. Danny Caine, Raven Bookstore One thing about having your first child is your reading habits need to be reinvented. In part, its a matter of simply having less time to read. But its also a matter of being more tired or distracted when you do have time to read. So I found myself searching for books that absolutely commanded me, demanding my attention and refusing to let it go. The two books that did that most effectively were Colson Whiteheads The Nickel Boys and Ilya Kaminskys Deaf Republic. Theyre both books that find a range of feeling in their tragic stories: funny, devastating, ironic, bitter, elegiac. Theyre both books Im still thinking about long after I finished reading them (I actually read The Nickel Boys twice because I had to see how Whitehead pulled off that ending. Another place I turn for books that will grab ahold of me and not let go is mysteries, and the two best mysteries I read this year were Attica Lockes Heaven My Home and Denise Minas Conviction. Ive long admired mystery writers who are interested in making compelling political statements with crime fiction. Mina and Locke both do it with aplomb in their smart and thrilling mysteries. Speaking of smart, this year produced some amazing memoirs that pushed the limits of what memoir could do. The Beautiful Ones by Prince, based on the 28 handwritten pages of memoir Prince wrote before he died, starts with those pages and becomes not a memoir but a book about the act of remembering. Its gorgeous. Carmen Maria Machados In the Dream House experiments with a different genre in each of its dozens of chapters. Further, footnotes identify folk tale tropes in Machados affecting story. In this way, Machados memoir also interrogates the very notion of memoir, presenting both the story and the story of making the story. This year, my son began to do this thing where hed pull a bunch of his board books off the shelf and make a pile, basically burying himself with books. If I had to bury myself in books from 2019, Id start with these six. Danny Caine is the owner of the Raven Book Store in Lawrence, Kansas. Hes the author of the poetry collections Continental Breakfast and El Dorado Freddys, as well as the zine How to Resist Amazon and Why. In 2019, the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association awarded Danny the Midwest Bookseller of the Year award. More at. Gary Lovely, The Book Loft This was a great reading year for me, though it didnt seem long enough and almost never does. I started the year reading Jack Davis Pulitzer Prize-winner The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea (Liveright/W. W. Norton, 2017. Davis historical telling of the Gulf of Mexico is an absolute must for anyone remotely interested in environmental history and conservation. In what seemed like an endless year of natural disasters, the environment played a key-role in my reading for the year. Like most Kentuckians, I obsess over Wendell Berrys work like scripture. This year, Ive read through The World-Ending Fire (Counterpoint, 2017) twice and have probably hand-sold at least one copy per week since doing so. In this book of essays spanning from 1968 to 2011, Berry speaks on the importance of the independent farmer and his life in Port Royal, Kentucky. I should also mention that his wife, Tanya Berry, has a forthcoming book of photographs in 2020 ( For the Hog Killing, University of Kentucky Press. Of Berrys collection, I also read Think Little, The Art of Loading Brush, and A Small Porch: Sabbath Poems 2014. A Small Porch contains what is now my favorite poem by Berry. You dont know the day until Youve seen the last of it Reddening the hill And rising into night As for poetry, I would be remiss if I didnt mention Darren Demarees newest, Emily as Sometimes the Forest Wants the Fire (Harpoon Books, 2019. I launched Harpoon Books last year as a project of The Harpoon Review and this is the first release. Ive admired Darrens work, especially his “Emily As” series for a long time and this book was an absolute pleasure to work on. As for fiction, I loved The Vine That Ate the South, by J. D. Wilkes (Two Dollar Radio, 2017. Wilkes, fellow Kentucky Colonel and frontman for rockabilly band The Legendary Shack Shakers seems to be good at everything, especially spinning together a perfect southern gothic tale. The Vine That Ate the South follows two western Kentuckians on a hunt for the haunted Kudzu House, whose vines swallowed an elderly couple whole. If you love folklore, this one is a must. Most recently, I listened to There There by Tommy Orange (Knopf, 2018) as my fist toe-dip into, the audiobook company. Orange has a way of writing death that is unlike anything Ive read or listened to before. The audiobook cast was fantastic. I cant recommend this book enough. Other great reads from this year: Ghosts in the Schoolyard by Eve Ewing They Cant Kill Us Until They Kill Us by Hanif Abdurraqib Grand Union by Zadie Smith Diary of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell Gary Lovely is the founder of Harpoon Books, an independent publishing company based in Columbus, Ohio. He is currently the Marketing Manager for The Book Loft of German Village in Columbus, OH and sits on the review board for Trillium Publishing, an imprint of Ohio State University Press. James Crossley, Madison Books This was a year full of good reading, but I will always remember it, at least in part, as the year of what I wasnt able to read. After more than a decade as a bookseller, I helped launch a brand-new store in 2019 and have been managing it since its spring grand opening. Its been a fantastic experience, but a hectic one. By all means, open a bookshop of your own in 2020 if you can, but dont plan on having more time to read than you did the year before. Still, I have a long list of favorites, starting with what was hands-down the best non-fiction book of 2019, Underland by Robert Macfarlane, as beautifully written as it is important for what it has to say, which is a great deal about the human relationship with the earth, past, present, and future. As a glass half-empty kind of reader, I was also stunned to be stunned by two books about joy that didnt cloy. The essay collections One Long River of Song by Brian Doyle and The Book of Delights by Ross Gay may not have turned me into an optimist, but god, I love them both. My year in fiction was dominated by Lucy Ellmanns brilliant Ducks, Newburyport. By now plenty of people have had a chance to weigh in on this weighty novel, but I went all-in on it from before the beginning. I read it pre-publication, praised it to the skies, and was proud to see that my little blurb made it into the final version. Not bad to see a Madison Books credit in print before the store was even six months old. This isnt to slight my other favorite novels of 2019. Lets see, those would be Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli, Deep River by Karl Marlantes, The Heavens by Sandra Newman, Lanny by Max Porter, Women Talking by Miriam Toews, and The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. Those are only the ones written in English. Special mention goes to the great translated works I ran across this year: Three Summers (written by Margarita Liberaki/translated by Karen Van Dyck) Optic Nerve (Maria Gainza/Thomas Bunstead) The Dreamed Part (Rodrigo Fresan/Will Vanderhyden) Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (Olga Tokarczuk/Antonia Lloyd-Jones) Baron Wenckheims Homecoming (Laszlo Kraszhnahorkai/Ottilie Mulzet) and EEG (Dasa Drndic/Celia Hawkesworth. Wait! I still have to tell you about some SF and fantasy! Ted Chiangs Exhalation, Jo Waltons Lent, Helen Phillipss The Need, and Jeff VanderMeers Dead Astronauts. And John Crowley, whose name I like to throw around whenever an otherwise pointless discussion of “Whos Americas Greatest Living Writer? ” breaks out, published not one, but two books. Both collect his briefer writings, Reading Backwards (his nonfiction) and And Go Like This (his short stories. You have room for at least one more, I know you do. Its just a sliver, but it slides in like a knife: Ilya Kaminskys Deaf Republic. James Crossley has been a bookseller of one kind or another for over two decades, working at one point for the largest retailer around and now as the manager of one of the smallest, Seattles miniature but mighty Madison Books. Jarrod Annis, Greenlight Bookstore On the eve of a new decade, amid the rising tide of best-of lists, I found myself thinking about this last year in particular. There have been years where I pushed myself to read everything—especially as a bookseller—so that I could keep current and be ready to predict all the year-end roundups. The last year was not one of those. I was looking for something different this year, maybe solace, maybe something else, but it was a year of looking for things. I read books about the fluidity and flaw of memory. I read books about landscape—urban and rural, preserved and decaying. I read about imagined lives and the persistence of language and art. Cesar Airas Birthday (New Directions) and Renee Gladmans Morelia (Solid Objects) are two very short books—both great—dealing with the recovery of something misremembered, begging the question of what even existed in the first place. These are prime examples of why Gladman and Aira are two of my absolute favorite minds at work today. Id been meaning to read Song of Solomon (Vintage) for years, and Toni Morisons passing this year finally got me there. An unfortunate impetus, but an incantatory read. I also took time to appreciate Morrisons legacy as an editor, revisiting Gayl Joness Corregidora (Beacon Press) and Henry Dumass The Echo Tree (Coffee House Press. Amid a year of great titles from Chantal Ackerman, Merce Cunningham and Hannah Brooks-Motl, the Song Cave released The Alley of Fireflies, a kaleidoscopic head-trip of shorter works by one of literatures all-time greatest kooks, Raymond Roussel. Made me wish Id had this book before wading into the all-out delirium of his novels. I feel Im always made better when a new Valeria Luiselli makes it into the world, and The Lost Children Archive (Knopf) was no exception. A recasting of the American road novel, Luiselli sets out new paths and routes through a landscape of love and crisis too long perceived as familiar, where readers can lose themselves only to find others. Sweet Days of Discipline (New Directions) People in the Room (And Other Stories) Forever Valley (University of Nebraska Press) sorely in need of reissue, btw] Berg (And Other Stories) Malina (New Directions) and Ice (Penguin Classics) were all novels of such exacting interiority and tension that it felt like reading strange, arty thrillers. More than that, they are exercises in the power of tone, each of them diamond-precise in their own right, perfect for anyone eagerly awaiting the next dose of Clarice Lispector. Im continually floored by the ongoing NYRB Classics reissue of Sylvia Townsend Warners books, and The Corner That Held Them, didnt disappoint. A quiet book set in a convent amid the Black Death, its a historical novel that manages to illustrate the constancies of humanity throughout time. I always read a little SF&F, for good measure; I found myself returning the eerily prescient Philip K. Dick, this time with Now Wait For Last Year (Mariner Books) Philip K. Dicks romp through intergalactic corporate psychotropic warfare, time travel, and the binding ties of love and obligation. This abutted Solaris, Gene Wolfes Shadow of the Torturer, and Samuel R. Delanys Dhalgren —a beloved intermittent and perennially in-progress reread. I took a short detour into the delightful mirco-genre of fictional biography and enjoyed Marcel Schwobs Imaginary Lives (Wakefield) and Fleur Jaeggys Three Possible Lives (New Directions) thoroughly. Reveling primarily in the minor figures of history, each of these read like fairy tales, or parables of lives and times other than our own. Hilda Hilsts Of Death (co-im-presS) and The Nioque of Early Spring by Francis Ponge (Song Cave) were two of my standout reads as a BTBA judge, but the two poetry books that stayed with me this year were Asyia Waduds Syncope (Ugly Duckling Presse) and Train Ride by Ted Berrigan, both memorials, Waduds a eulogy for the unnecessary casualties of borders, and Berrigans an out-of-print paean to transit and absent friends. I thought a lot about seasons and weather, their effect on particular landscapes, and the desire to know those landscapes. I found myself reacquainted with everyones favorite woodland curmudgeon, Henry David Thoreau, via his journals, which are unequivocally better than any assigned reading—a revealing of wonder, above all other things, at that most precarious intersection of science and art. It was in this light that I read one of my favorite books of the year, Underland (W. Norton) Robert Macfarlanes sojourner-as-psychopomp study on deep-time amid the myriad pasts and possible futures of Earth and humanity; hes a writer Ill follow wherever he chooses to go. Hes also a generous writer whose freely espouses his influences, setting me on a path toward such masterstrokes of nature writing as The Peregrine (NYRB Classics) and the gorgeous new edition of Nan Shepherds The Living Mountain (Canongate. I read the reissue of Val Wilmers chronicle of the free jazz movement As Serious As Your Life (Serpents Tale) which is a great book about devotion to craft and art. Along those lines, Dorothea Laskys Animal (Wave Books) is a book Id been waiting for a long time, and one of my favorite meditations on creative thought and process, and all the spaces in which we can find to access it. There were also two great books that came out which had their beginnings on the now sadly defunct website The Toast: Mo Moultons The Mutual Admiration Society (Basic Books) is a group biography and renegade queer history following Golden-Age detective novelist Dorothy L. Sayers and her college writing group from the Oxford quadrangle as they forged lives for themselves in the fraught, pre-feminist landscape of interwar England. The other was of particular interest to me as a high-functioning luddite, Gretchen McCullochs Because Internet (Riverhead Books) a study of post-internet language and linguistics which drives home the fact that weve just lived through one of the most explosive and innovative periods in the development of language EVER. Though its always a strange exercise in time to catalog anything thats happened over a finite period. Though unsure of what I was looking for when the year started, that particular line of horizon, literary and otherwise, has been set a little further into the distance than it was before. And isnt that the idea, after all? Jarrod Annis is a writer and bookseller living in Brooklyn, where he manages Greenlight Bookstore in Fort Greene. He is a board member of the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses, and has served as a poetry judge for the Best Translated Book Award. Jenny Lyons, Vermont Bookshop Working at a bookstore, I get to see all the new books as they come through the door. And literally, no pun intended. I want to read them all. I genuinely choose books to read by how they look and feel. A striking book jacket can draw me in quite easily. That is how I discovered Margaret Renkls Late Migrations: A Natural History of Love and Loss (Milkweed Editions. What a treasure. I was captivated by the astonishing vignettes she created in just a few short sentences; mere fragments conveyed a lifetime. And then to find her brother was the artist behind the flora and fauna collage illustrations in the book, in color mind you, and the gorgeous silhouette of a childs head gracing the cover. I write a weekly book review for our local paper, and a good portion of my year is reading is directed by that, but fortunately it allows me entry into a variety of genres, otherwise I would just read literary fiction. I discovered Carol Potenzas Hearts of the Missing (Minotaur Books) this way, looking for a mystery to review. Set in New Mexico and involving the disappearances of Fire-Sky natives, it is her debut novel, winner of the 2017 Tony Hillerman Prize, and it really deserves to be more widely read, and I do hope it is the first in a series. I also seek out books by Vermont authors, and I was rewarded when, having booked an event for Emily Arnason Casey, I picked up her collections of essays, Made Holy (University of Georgia Press. What amazed me about this book was the freshness and originality of the styles and structures she utilized while she also evoked such a strong sense of nostalgia for a childhood passed. Really honest, authentic writing. And then I am not sure why I came to this book, it could have been on the recommendation of a trusted editor, but I was nearly overwhelmed by reading Solitary (Grove Press) the life story of Albert Woodfox, one of the Angola prisoners who was wrongly convicted for killing a prison guard and subsequently spent over 40 years in solitary confinement. Anyone who reads this humane account will not be able to regard prisons or punishment in the same way again. Finally, I should add, in light of the season, the very intelligent writer Jon Clinch has created another deft re-imagining of a significant literary figure in his new book, Marley (Atria Books) as in Jacob Marley, partner to Charles Dickens Scrooge, in this telling the person responsible for making Scrooge the way he is, but also the person responsible for summoning the ghosts of Christmas past to try to help Scrooge redeem himself before its too late. Jenny Lyons, marketing manager at the Vermont Book Shop, has been bookselling, here and there, since the 1990s. A book lover since she was able to read on her own, many decades ago... Part two in this series will appear Friday the 27th.

This is the best tv show ever made. Watch it how many times you want, never disappoints. Friends watch full length youtube. This show has to be one of the best shows on TV! I love all of the characters in it (Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and finally Ross) and I love the live rsonly, I like Joey (Matt LaBlanc) the best because he is so dumb but in a funny way. I love how each character has their own personality. It clearly was a hit on TV! In season 8 I can't believe that Rachel gets pregnant and Ross is the father. Their life must be really complicated. I also can't believe that Chandler and Monica get married. The sad thing is though is that Monica can't have children and they have to adopt which is really sweet. Anyway all I can say is W-O-W.

In 2022: new Friends show, the characters are their children: the triplets of Phoebe, the twins of Monica and Chandler, and the daughter of Rachel and Ross. Friends watch full length video. Friends Watch Full lengthy. First things first: Yes, we know it's probably colossally stupid to write a binge-watching guide for a show that so dominates syndication it's nearly impossible most TV viewers haven't already binge-watched it (even if by accident. But you know what? It's the holiday season and sometimes spending a whole day wearing pajamas, resting off a food coma, and watching Friends is about the best thing one can do to escape the fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la game. Read More Binge-Watching Guides The Office (UK Version) Freaks and Geeks Party Down Also, Friends always had great holiday episodes. (Remember when then-Jennifer-Aniston-boo Brad Pitt showed up for Thanksgiving and hated Rachel? LOL. And those episodes are always a little more poignant this time of year. Anyway, for the three people born yesterday who don't know, Friends is a show about a group of pals who live in impossibly nice apartments in New York City despite their incomes and generally drink coffee and share misadventures. If you were a kid in the 1990s, this made your 20s seem like it was going to be the best time you would ever have. And even if you're no longer a kid, or even well past your 20s, this is still a fun show. (And laughing at 90s fashion never gets old. So, come on, friends. Let's sit back and enjoy the lives of Rachel (Aniston) Ross (David Schwimmer) Monica (Courteney Cox) Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Chandler (Matthew Perry. Oh, and Gunther (James Michael Tyler. Gunther forever. Ed. —and Russ. Friends Number of Seasons: 10 (238 episodes) Time Requirements: Real talk: There's like 85 hours of television here. You could get through it in about two weeks if you quit your job and just watched eight hours of Friends a day, but no one wants that. Take your time and graze on these over a couple months. Take in a few episodes a night and a half-dozen or so on weekends and you can get through this in about three months. (Also, you don't have to watch every episode if you don't want to, but we'll get to that in a second. Where to Get Your Fix: DVD, TBS (let's be honest, it's probably on right now) coming to Netflix on Jan. 1, 2015. Best Character to Follow: Are you really tidy? Monica. A bit self-absorbed? Rachel. A paleontologist who fancies himself Indiana Jones? Ross. A spacey acoustic guitar player-slash-masseuse? Phoebe. A lunkheaded actor who doesn't know how to use air quotes and thinks the phrase is "it's a moo point. but is really good at removing bras? Joey. A sarcastic pseudo-jerk? Chandler. Honestly, it doesn't matter. There isn't a single person here on some great journey—just watch them all fumble through life. Seasons/Episodes You Can Skip: OK, here's the deal: This show really isn't about anything. Unlike, say, How I Met Your Mother —which was also about a bunch of New York 20-somethings with uncommonly nice living quarters—there isn't an implicit ending in the title. Aside from the series-long arc revolving around whether or not Ross and Rachel would end up together, there is no central conflict or goal. It's literally just about six people who do pretty inconsequential stuff (remember: no one told you life was gonna be this way. Knowing that leaves you pretty capable of going into any episode cold, so you can watch or not watch any of them. Think of Friends like that bowl of candy your mom puts out at the holidays: just eat what you want until you've had enough. This is incredibly easy since the naming convention of the show—e. g. The One with the Lesbian Wedding (the 90s, everyone)—pretty much tells you what will happen in any installment. That said, if you want to know which episodes to watch just to keep up with all the references people make to this show, read on. (Oh, and for what it's worth, the last two seasons are pretty meh. After Season 8 just skip to the series finale, which will make you cry anyway. Ed. —Gotta make an exception for Season 10's " The One With Ross's Tan. which is glorious. Seasons/Episodes You Can't Skip: Season 1: Episode 1, The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate" Rachel leaves a guy at the altar and runs to her friend Monica, whom she hasn't seen in years and didn't deem worthy of inviting to her wedding. Monica's brother Ross is reminded that he's loved Rachel since high school, when she barely knew he was alive. Rachel moves in with Monica in the Village (because things like that can just happen on TV, OK. and the entire will-they-won't-they? between Ross and Rachel begins. Season 1: Episode 7, The One with the Blackout" This bottle episode throws most of the gang into Monica and Rachel's apartment (except Chandler, who's stuck in an ATM vestibule with Victoria's Secret model Jill Goodacre) during a blackout in New York City. While they're trapped, we learn all sorts of interesting things about the friends, like the strangest place Phoebe ever had sex is Milwaukee and that Joey is worried Ross is going to end up in the Friend Zone with Rachel ( Ross, you're mayor of the Zone. Season 1: Episode 18, The One with All the Poker" The guys teach the girls to play poker. Gender equality hilarity ensues! Season 1: Episode 24, The One Where Rachel Finds Out" Ross has to go to China for work but leaves behind his gift for Rachel's birthday—an antique pin Rachel saw in a store window that reminded her of one her grandmother had. This accidentally leads to Chandler spilling the beans that Ross is in love with Rachel. Season 2: Episode 7, The One Where Ross Finds Out" While Ross was in China, he met Julie. Julie became his girlfriend and Rachel realizes she has feelings for him. She then gets drunk and tells his answering machine that she's over him. You're over me? When were you under me. Classic Ross. Season 2: Episode 14, The One with the Prom Video" Monica unearths the video of her and Rachel's prom which reveals Ross put on his father's tux to be Rachel's date when said date—the appropriately-named Chip—looks like he's going to bail. Chip shows up at the last minute and Ross is heartbroken. After watching the tape, Rachel kisses Ross and Phoebe says the immortal words, See? He's her lobster. She previously stated that lobsters couple for life. Season 2: Episode 15, The One Where Ross and Rachel. You Know" Monica reunites with her parents' friend Dr. Richard Burke (Tom Selleck) and starts one of her big romances of the show. Also, Ross and Rachel bone. Obviously. Season 2: Episode 22, The One with the Two Parties" In order to make things easier with Rachel's separated parents, the gang throws Rachel two birthday parties—one in the guys' apartment, one in the girls. Situational comedy! Season 3: Episode 2, The One Where No One's Ready" The friends have stupid arguments that cause them to be late for an event at the museum where Ross works. (This is the one where Joey puts on all of Chandler's clothes. Season 3: Episode 9, The One with the Football" One of the show's many great Thanksgiving episodes. In this one the gang plays touch football, reigniting an old rivalry between siblings Ross and Monica. Season 3: Episode 16, The One the Morning After" Ross sleeps with someone after Rachel suggests they need a break. They have a huge fight while the other four friends are stuck in Monica's room listening. (This is the start of that whole "we were on a break" thing. Your friends probably quote this. Season 4: Episode 8, The One with Chandler in a Box" Another great Thanksgiving episode. Chandler kissed Joey's girlfriend so Joey puts him in a box to do penance during Turkey Day. Monica invites Richard's son Tim to dinner, which is creepy. Season 4: Episode 12, The One with the Embryos" Phoebe agrees to carry the artificially inseminated embryos of her brother Frank (Giovanni Ribisi) and his wife. She'll end up with triplets. The gang also competes in a game of knowledge about each others' lives, which remains one of the best scenes in the entire series. #transponster Season 5: Episode 1, The One After Ross Says Rachel" In the Season 4 finale, while at the altar marrying a woman named Emily, Ross said "I take thee, Rachel. Also, Monica and Chandler had sex. This is the aftermath, where Rachel almost joins Ross on his honeymoon and Monica and Chandler realize that they kinda like having sex. Season 5: Episode 3, The One Hundredth/The One with the Triplets" Phoebe goes into labor with Frank's triplets. (Her doctor is obsessed with Happy Days. Joey has kidney stones. His doctor will go on to be the principal on Glee. Meanwhile, Monica and Chandler are "goofing around" and hiding it from everyone. There's also a great moment when Phoebe confesses to Rachel that she wants to keep one of the babies. Rachel's response—"Oh, I'm going to be on the news. "—is one of a million examples of just how good Aniston's comedic timing was on this show. Season 5: Episode 11, The One with All the Resolutions" The gang makes New Year's resolutions. The hardest to keep seems to be Chandler's resolve to not make sarcastic comments about his friends. (Also, Ross wears leather pants and it goes very, very wrong. Season 5: Episode 14, The One Where Everybody Finds Out" Phoebe and Rachel, now aware that everyone knows about Monica and Chandler's relationship, decide to mess with the "new" couple by sending Phoebe in to flirt with Chandler. Season 5: Episodes 23 and 24, The One in Vegas: Parts 1 and 2" Ross and Rachel get married in Vegas, leading to one of Ross' umpteen divorces. Season 6: Episode 9, The One Where Ross Got High" This Thanksgiving Monica invited her and Ross' folks, who still don't know she's in a relationship with Chandler. They don't like him for an unknown reason, which Ross later deduces is because he got busted smoking pot in college and blamed Chandler. Rachel screws up dessert. Season 6: Episodes 15 and 16, The One That Could Have Been: Parts 1 and 2" Phoebe is a Wall Street big-shot, Ross is still married to a lesbian, and Rachel considers cheating on her husband with Days of Our Lives star Joey. This two-parter answers the age-old question every group of friends has asked themselves: If we had taken different paths in life, would we still hang out? Season 6: Episodes 24 and 25, The One with the Proposal: Parts 1 and 2" Chandler tries to propose to Monica, but Richard shows up at the restaurant where it was supposed to happen. Chandler then decides to try to throw Monica way off the marriage track and act like a guy who will never get married. Monica, in turn, freaks and gets rattled further when Richard returns and tells her he wants to marry her. A comedy of errors ensues before leading up to one of the show's best moments (below. There's also a great subplot where Joey gets a boat. Season 7: Episode 1, The One with Monica's Thunder" Ross and Rachel steal Monica's thunder by hooking up during her engagement party. Season 7: Episode 20, The One with Rachel's Big Kiss" Winona Ryder shows up as a college friend Rachel once drunkenly made out with. To prove she's still crazy at heart, Rachel kisses her again. and Ryder's Melissa confesses her love. Season 7: Episodes 23 and 24, The One with Monica and Chandler's Wedding: Parts 1 and 2" After a predictable "cold feet" bit, Chandler and Monica finally tie the knot. Pass the tissues. Also, Rachel finds out she's knocked up. Season 8: Episode 9, The One with the Rumor" This is that one where Brad Pitt does a guest appearance and fights with Rachel, which is funny 'cause Pitt and Aniston were married at the time. Let's all have a moment of silence. for Pitt's frosted hair. (Side Note: This one also caused controversy for joking about intersex youth. Season 10: Episodes 17 and 18, The Last One: Parts 1 and 2" The series finale two-parter is a tear-jerker. It also has the now-infamous "I got off the plane" line from Rachel. (See below. Watch and weep. Why You Should Binge: Because, like Seinfeld, Friends is probably going to be part of the pop culture lexicon for at least another decade or so and you might as well know what the eff " Smelly Cat " is all about. Or "pivot. Or "MY SANDWICH. Or "How you doin. Best Scene—Rachel Gets Off the Plane: Honestly, Monica's proposal to Chandler is probably sweeter, but the moment where Rachel got off of a plane to her new job in Paris to be with Ross is the one most people watched this show for 10 seasons to see. The Takeaway: This is pretty much a standard-issue sitcom about a bunch of fairly one-or-two-note white people. and if you don't fall in love with them at some point you probably have no soul. They'll be there for you even when your real friends aren't. (For real, this was the best show. There's a reason it was on the air forever and the people on it were grossly overpaid. If You Liked Friends You'll Love: How I Met Your Mother or any other comedy about a group of young people just trying to make it in [insert big city here.
